Off for my first forage

Elop

Warren Scout
Hello, I’m taking the children for a walk this morning and we are going to forage for the rabbit. I am pretty useless with sorts of plants so wondered if anyone could advise me of a couple of easy to identify forage plants that I am likely to find at this time of year.
Thank you

Dandelions, some nice grass, and brambles would be easy to find I think. Best to pick away from traffic and where dogs might have urinated on them.

I think your rabbit is quite young? So you need to be extra careful to introduce new foods very slowly, so as not to upset the tummy.

There’s a big thread on foraging http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?455755-my-foraging-diary that you might find interesting, there’s some books recommended on there too.

I agree with all that zoobec has said :thumb:

Sorry, I hate to put a dampener on your enthusiasm, but if I were you I would consider the RHD2 risk. I think your rabbit has only just had his vaccination and so will not have got full immunity. It takes 7 days for this to occur. Wild forage carries a potential RHD2 risk and so I would wait until his vaccine has had a chance to kick in.

You could still go for your walk as planned and use it to establish the best places locally to find forage and also to try to identify the species that zoobec has mentioned:)

And there's a very good book written by Twigs Way called 'Foraging for Rabbits' which can be purchased from the RWAF bookshop :D

Ah you’re so right I was thinking exactly this and about mixy so I decided against it. We had a nice walk and I’ve ordered more forage from the internet.
