Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Has anyone used Stanhope Park vets? I’ve registered my rabbit with them as they come up as RAWF approved one. I’ve had his rhd and rhd2 done tonight at vets4pets but I want a proper rabbit doctor available for his castration. When can he be castrated? Anyone know how much it costs? Many thanks

As soon as he is a visible male... If you know what I mean [emoji38]

They can do it before but it's much more involved and I wouldn't do that. So yea as soon as there are plumbs you can book him in :) my male was slow to develop and he was done at 6 month old

Cost varies I think mine charges around £100

Hehe yes the vet tonight said she can’t be 100% sure he is Male as he hasn’t developed in that region! He might be a she but we just don’t know. Not that I mind either way. I think he is a boy as he is very gentle and affectionate.

In the absence of any obvious 'plums' then this may help you ascertain the gender of your Rabbit

Re the Vaccination, are you certain it was the RHD1/RHD2 Vaccine that Vets4Pets gave (ie 'Filavac') ? If so Bunny will also need another Vaccination to offer protection against Myxomatosis (Nobivac Myxo-RHD) These vaccines are both essential and there needs to be a two week gap between each one being given.

The Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund provide a vast amount of information about Rabbits, I'd take a look on here if you have not already done so

https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/

Re the cost of a Castration-All Vets set their own Fees so it'd be best to check with the Practice you decide to use :)

Yes I’m certain it was the combo of rhd1 and 2. I’ve also checked the batch number to ensure it’s not one of the recalled ones.He is going back for mixy shortly. I’m not going to try and sex him. The vet said at 10 weeks his testicles might not have descended yet.

Wait there's a combined RHD1 and RHD2 vaccine? :S

I thought it was just mixy and RHD1 (combined vaccine) and RHD2 is a separate vaccination?

Interested to know if there are others I've not heard of? :)

Yes there is. It’s by felivac.

Yep, the UK filavac (not felivac!) covers for both RHD1 and RHD2. It's generally referred to as the RHD2 vaccine because most people will already have vaccinated with nobivac which covers both myxo and RHD1, so it is only being used because of its RHD2 cover.

I've not personally used them, but I know that Stanhope vets are supposed to be excellent

Hello Elop.

I am assuming you mean Stanhope Park Vets in Darlington. If so, yes they are my vets. I use them for my 6 rabbits and my dog, so I might be biased but in my opinion they are very good. I also know RU member Tuckerbunnies uses them now as well.

Are you using the Cats and Exotics practice on Duke Street? I like it in there as it is such a calmer environment without all the dogs trying to wind each other up in the main practice on Stanhope Road. Very importantly, they are a 24 hour practice and do their own out of hours at the main practice.

RWAF give them the Silver Award, which means that they don't have a dedicated 'rabbits specialist' but that they are still very knowledge and up-to-date on rabbit medicine. They will be able to neuter your bunny with no problems.

You don't always see the same vet, but my favourite 'Rabbit' vets to ask for if you have anything more serious are Ana, Yasmin (she has rats) and Micaela Wright. Micaela is the Head vet and main owner of the practice. Be warned, Micaela is an excellent and caring vet but she is also very direct and straight talking. Some people don't like that, but I like and respect her honesty.

I seem to live in the vets at the moment. My little Mini Lop Hershel has had a really nasty ear infection and has just had his ears flushed, so I have made sure my appointments have been with Micaela to ensure continuity.

I hope this helps.
