Embarrassing question *blush*

Smudge

I am probably going to sound really stupid here so i apologize in advance

We had Bailey neutered 2 weeks tomorrow and our vet told us to keep him and Smudge separated for 2-4 weeks so we were planning to introduce them at 3 weeks.

Now we let them have a sniff of each other a few days ago without the bars being in the way and Bailey get *ahem* rather randy, we obviously pulled them apart before anything could happen but we saw his red lipstick (as Nicola would say  ) and what only could be semen coming out of it.

This got me wondering how on earth does the semen drain from the rabbit if he doesn't get 'excited' or does after time the semen that was in the rabbit die?

After seeing this do u think 3 weeks will be long enough or should we *cough* get him excited again and see what 'arises'

Thanks in advance

If the girl is not neutered, you should wait up to six or eight weeks to make sure he is not fertile anymore.

She isn't, geez a long wait i think! We will prob be getting her done after xmas so they will have to be separated again

I feel like the bad mommy, they are so keen to be with each other and bonding pretty well but babies can not happen!

Just before i had Dubbs neuteured i used to let him run around and circle a lifesize, rabbit-shaped, piggy bank i had which i actually used for a garden ornament, until one day he suddenly mounted it...

if you have a similar item at home, it might be a good way to 'empty him out'

Hiya, it can take between 6 to 8 weeks for young, virile Bucks to express all the stored semen, so better to be safe than sorry, and opt for the Cuddly Toy companion in the meantime instead :D

Right so the 22nd of December we can introduce them, a nice little christmas present for each other :p

Guess i can't stop down London til then so i better pack me bags and come back down then

Looks like i've got the task of splitting the new bunny shed down the middle to separate them because i think Jamie's mum is going to go mad if they are kept in much longer

Thanks for the info so far everyone :)

Just wondering whether it would be possible to have the girl neutered sooner so you won't need to separate again. Vera

We could do but on the lead of to christmas we are a bit here, there and everywhere! (Don't worry the bunnies will be cleaned and fed by Jamie's mum!! :p ) Also i'm leaving for Birmingham next Friday to go back home for a little while

I would rather wait til i can come down to London and keep an eye on her as much as possible. Think will have to have a chat with the OH and see what he thinks :?

Thanks again

Yip, keep them apart longer! No less than 6 weeks.

I would put bugzee and shadow`s cages next to eachother at night so they could see eachother before I let them run around together:) (don`t have the cages touching as she could still get preggies!!) They bonded really well and they didn`t fight once.

Blimey!

I thought you had to keep boys and girls seperate for 6 weeks after the op so I was surprised to hear its up to 8 weeks! Harrys going to the vet tomorrow and Kathy (from the rescue) is taking Lily our new bunny (whos not yet with us) to the vet Friday. We were hoping they could be spending Christmas together!

I was planning to put their cages next to each other when they both come home so Im shocked to hear Bronie say that they can still do the deed through the fencing! Hows that possible I hope my Harrys last names not houdini!! How far apart should they be then!!

Maria

As long as it has been more than 6 weeks you wont need to seperate them again after she has been spayed as long as they have bonded. i had miffy spayed two weeks ago she went straight back in with claude

Thanks for the help but just to make sure I understand it properly if Lily is splayed this Friday then i can put them together 6 weeks from then which would be Christmas eve (Aaaah they can see santa together!!)

I have already bought them more pressies than Ive bought Kev!!

If the girl is spayed then you don't have to wait for the boy to stop being fertile. You do need to wait for the girl to heal up though but that should be a couple of weeks rather than six.

Aye, obviously your little girl can't get pregant after she's spayed, but if her boyfriend is still feeling boisterous and hormonal he might hurt her if he starts mounting her too soon after her operation. Especially if they're not bonded yet. She'll need at least a couple of weeks to heal up before you'd want to introduce them. :) Even if he wasn't hormonal, a bonding can be very stressful for the bunnies and you don't want them to be fighting while she's still poorly.

Thanks for that, Bertie is very cute!

Do you think that i should put their cages near one another so they get used to seeing each other and their smells? I will have them both by next week although i'll be keeping the seperated as per your recommendations.

Thanks Maria

Hi there,

I've had various Bucks of my own, neutered (all of which highly-fertile ex-breeding bucks of mine!) to live with female friends & i've always put them together at 3 weeks after the castration - with no 'accidents' whatsoever.

This is in accordance with what my ex-boss & friend (who is an experienced small animal vet) tells me.

Also in the rabbit 'bible' by rabbit specialist vet Virginia Richardson;Health, Husbandry & Diseases it says the following;

"The castrated buck can be paired with a doe after 2 weeks. Residual stored sperm should be gone by this time."

I personally think 6 weeks separation is a bit too extreme & not really necessary.

Thanks Cheryl

That book sounds good. Kathy gave me a little one when I got Harry from the rescue but I thought I might get a more comprehensive guide as I want to find out as much as I can - is that one you'd recommend then?
