  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Reduced output - how to help?

Wise Old Thumper
Bertie's output has become less copious and golden in the last couple of weeks. He is otherwise fine. I have tried giving him a few pro-fibre pellets but this hasn't made any difference. Could the weather be a factor? He is not drinking more than usual during the hot weather.

Is he still eating the same amount of hay?

This and also his gut contents may be a bit dehydrated if he is not drinking enough in this very hot weather. Does he have a water bowl or a bottle ? Rabbits tend to drink more from a bowl. Adding some Avipro Plus/Avipro Pro-C professional always means my Rabbits drink A LOT more water.

Serving fresh Veg left wet from rinsing will add a bit of hydration too.

Given that Bertie has had a previous gut motility issue I would get him checked over by a Vet, just to err on the side of caution :)

Meantime, a bit of reading that may be helpful

Hi Susie :)

I don't know whether he's eating grass (or readigrass) more than hay at the moment, but that always results in smaller and darker poos.

He could also be moulting so it's especially important that he drinks enough and also eats enough fibre. I tend to feed a few herbs and wash them and leave them wet - the same with greens.

Have you tried fibafirst sticks?

Thanks for replies. Bertie is due a nail clip so I will mention my concerns to his vet.

His output has been better overnight and this morning but I take on board all the suggests. Thanks from Susie and Bertie. x

I’m glad his output has been better :thumb: hopefully the vet will be able to give him a clean bill of health:thumb:
