  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore hock

Hi every bun,

I know I can Google this but I prefer RU advice and experience.

Maple is developing a sore hock on one foot. It's bright red, looks fresh but not bleeding yet.

Maple has meadow hay for litter tray and has a number if different fleeces including vet bed which I rotate when soiled.

What can I do to prevent this getting worse. Toby and Dennis have no sore hocks yet.

Could this be a problem from where Maple was kept before?

Sore hocks can develop as a secondary symptom of another mobility problem. For example if just one hock is sore the Rabbit may be taking more weight on that leg, suggesting that there might be some discomfort in the spine /hip/other leg.

Sometimes charging about on carpet can cause sore hocks, carpet being abrasive. I dont know if Maple has access to carpeted areas ?

If the problem has only just occurred I'd be minded to get your Vet to check her over, just to make sure that the sore hock is not a secondary symptom as opposed to the primary problem. I am reluctant to advise you to apply anything topical to the area until Maple has been examined.
