  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Warning to vaccinate your bunnies

On a side not I didn't realise the 1950's outbreak killed 99% of the UK wild rabbit population....

It is good to see the subject being highlighted. Whilst RHD1+2 remain huge threats to Rabbits, Myxomatosis has not gone away and where as at one time it could be seen to be a more 'Seasonal' disease with peaks in the Autumn, it is now a threat all year round. Sadly there are still some people who believe that House Rabbits do not need vaccinations. All Rabbits are at risk, even if they never set foot outside.

Woah how the heck did rabbits repopulate the UK when 99% were wiped out?! Too bad all animals aren't as good at reproduction - we wouldn't have any extinct species then!

It really is important this info is out there for the public to see:) From an outsiders prospective (I'm from America), I feel like a lot of the focus has been on VHD ever since the VHD2 virus came around and not much discussion on myxi. I actually assumed the subject was about VHD when i opened it and then realized when I started reading the article that they were talking about myxi. Of course, anyone that actually does go and vaccinate their rabbits has myxi done too since I believe myxi and VHD1 is a combo vaccine, but still.

ETA: Lol I just saw Jane said the same pretty much. Great minds think alike I guess?

That's fine, just saw it and felt it should be highlighted again, especially with new owners coming on here too :)
