Sneezing Bunny

HollyMolly

New Kit
Morning all, I was hoping for a lie in this morning, but I was woken by my bunny Holly sneezing. (She sleeps in a separate room to me with the door closed.) She's been a little sneezy the past few days and I was monitoring her to see how she went, but this morning the sneezing was so loud followed by a little squeek noise, it woke me up. She seems quite happy in every other way, eating, drinking, using the litter. There is no discharge for her eyes and nose either.

We will be going to the vets later today. Thank goodness for insurance, as we seem to spend most of our time there at the moment. (Holly had a respiratory infection and few months back, shortly followed by her sister Molly with an ear infection.)

Any suggestions or advice would be really appreciated.

You are very wise to get her seen by a Vet today. These links may be useful to take a look at :

Have you checked her environment for dust, even the pellets have some dust in them. If you use wood shavings this could be upsetting her respiratory system. Hope she is better soon.

Hi there

It could be an allergic reaction to hay or whatever substrate you use (if you do) in the litter tray. Sneezing without any discharge is often not treated by vets as it's hard to know what's caused it. But you are wise to take her along to get a check up.

When my bun was sneezy I found this info very helpful:

http://www.veterinarywebinars.com/m...oads/2016/03/Study_Notes_Ear_Nose_Rabbits.pdf

You can also ask your vet about using Bisolvon. It's a mucolytic and it thins mucous and helps it pass, which is by far the easiest way of getting what's in there out!

Good luck and I look forward to reading what the vet says later :)

Hi all, thank you so much for your comments and advice.

We've just returned home and Holly is fine, no signs of infection, her chest, eyes and ears are all clear, her teeth are fine too.

So after a full MOT the vet thinks it's just an irritation, like hay fever, perhaps to the new hay we had tried. (Which has now gone in the bin.)

I'm going to keep a very close eye on her the next few days, and fingers crossed she will be back to normal.

Thank you from me and Holly:

You're welcome :)

It's always good to have your mind put at rest concerning these bunnies :)

She's very beautiful, and blue suits her

Awww!!

I had a similar sort of thing with my bunnies in the past and was adviced to mist the hay with water to stop the sneezing

I never thought of misting with water I will definitely try that, thank you so much for the suggestion. Xx

Your bunny is very good looking. It is good your bunny does not have any infection. I had two bunnies with allergies and with the second bunny the allergen was a mystery. Pellets were sifted to remove the fines, hay was shaken of any loose material, and his litter was replaced with towels or newspapers. I never tried misting the hay, but that does seem to be something worth trying.

I'm glad there was no infection :) One of my bunnies is allergic to some new hay I bought too (from Wilkinson's) and it's not even dusty. Poor girl would be absolutely fine away from her litter tray/hay rack, then as soon as she went near it she'd have a little sneezing fit

Hi all, just a little update, Holly sneezing has worsened since I last posted and I noticed she was struggling with her breathing. We rushed to the vets and they said it could be an infection/pneumonia as she had a crackling noise in her chest, and her breathing was very noisy.

How on earth we have gone from an allergy to pneumonia I do not know! :'(

Holly is on antibiotics (Baytril) and Metacam. She has been taking them for just over a week now and I think we do have a slight improvement with her breathing.

She's seems very happy in herself eating, drinking, pooing as normal. She even charges at the fence when I go in excited to see me. And she had put on weight at her check up today.

I have everything crossed and am trying everything I can for her. I'd really appreciate your comments or advice. I've asked my vet for Baytril in tablet form has anyone tried this? (I think it will be easier and less stressful than the liquid stuff to administer as I can hide it in a tasty banana.)

Xx

Holly,

Your bunnies allergies may cause her to have more thick mucus and/or irritation in her respiratory system that makes her more likely to get infections. I am glad she is behaving normally. Even so, you may want to check with the vets to see if her lungs are clear(ing) as much as expected after one week of treatment because you mention she has only had a slight improvement in her breathing. A longer course of treatment or a different abx may be required.

Hi Holly

I'm sorry I missed your post a couple of days ago.

Have always found that nebulising is the best way forward with respiratory issues. You can put Baytril in the nebuliser. My bunny will sit on my lap and take the mask, but otherwise people have made a chamber for them to be in and breathe in the steam/antibiotics.

Here's some info on that if you've not done it before:

The other thing I found very helpful was using Bisolvon, which is a mucolytic and thins the mucous so it passes easily. The problem with respiratory tract infections and bunnies is that antibiotics often have a hard time reaching where they are meant to go to do any good.

Holly has had two infections this year. So that really could explain it. We keep going to the vets every 4-5 days for a check up, and we are keeping up with the medicine. Thank you x

Thank you I never thought of a nebuliser. I will certainly ask my vet at our next appointment. I will have a good read of the thread you listed a quick read over them and some of the symptoms listed are exactly how Holly is. Thank you so much for your help everyone, it's so nice to hear from people who love bunnies too. I seem to have heard "it's just a rabbit" alot lately. :'( xx

Sending more positive vibes for Holly.

My late CX had a sneezing issue for more than half of his thirteen year life; so I know how stressful it can be for you and Holly.
Sending you and Holly more positive vibes.
