  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Afraid that my rabbit can get an infection, please help

I got a 13 year old Netherland Dwarf, and she has been in perfect health all her life. She roams free around my apartment 24 hours a day, but for a month now, her grooming has become poor, and I was forced to regulary clean her bum.
I was out of town for a few days, so a friend took care of her, when I got back today she was very dirty around her tail and hind legs, and I rushed too clean her.
When I was sitting with her on my lap I noticed that a patch of hair was missing on the lower part of the tail, near the genetailia, and when I tried to gently clean it, it started to bleed. She didn`t respond to it, and she acts normal, running around, eating, drinking, enjoys me petting her. BUT I was so shocked by the blood that I stopped cleaning her, afraid that I might worsen it. Since its Pentecost, all vets are closed, so I cant take her before tomorrow...
Should I try to clean her again? Or let it be until tomorrow? Is afraid to make it worse, but the risk of an infection burns on my mind. Hope anyone can please help me, she is my little baby...
