  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

We're off to the vets too!

It seems like everyone is taking their buns in at the moment, and I just don't like to be left out.

Sheffield has always been a bit of a sneezy bunny. When we took him in to be vaccinated the vet had a listen to his lungs and wasn't too concerned about him. Because he needed his VHD jab, plus treatment for mites, and he was already being treated for parasites we decided not to put him through any additional medication. He sounds like a right sickly thing, but he's actually very bright and inquisitive. He just needed fixing up a bit. Anyhoo, he's still sneezing, and he keeps getting a leaky eye. It's just every few days or so, but he looks like he's crying. Yesterday I found a nice lump of eye snot there and decided it was time to take him back in. Monopoly has been a bit sneezy too, so I'm taking them both in to see what's up.

He's eating and happy, I'm just hoping it's nothing too serious. :?

Fingers crossed for you. I dont know too much about rabbits but if he is still eating and nice and bright, it doesnt sound as though it is affecting him too badly.

Hope it all goes well and Im sure it wont be anything too serious, after all we all get a bit run down and sneezy in the winter months too :D

All 6 of my buns seem a bit subdued actually. I was wondering if it was just the weather and the darkness getting to them as well. They're house buns, but the lack of light must still be a factor, and they don't have heating in their room (we're so cruel) so they would be feeling the drop in temperature.

Maybe they all have depression. :? If they weren't going bonkers for their food I'd be worried. I think that's part of the reason I'm more concerned about Sheffield now. If he's a bit glum he's more likely to get poorly, I think. And the eye snot yesterday worried me. And then that makes me notice Monopoly sneezing more.

Ah well. Even if nothing's wrong, it's still an evening out. :D

He's definitely in good spirits and he loves his food. Plus he always runs over and demands attention, he just has little sneezing fits. No snot, but (as Bertie said) he is a bit weepy sometimes.

There were a couple of bogies a while ago. But they were back before we got the vet to have a listen the last time. I wiped his nose for him, and he's quite happy for me to pick about in his sticky eye fur cleaning him up. If there is something wrong and we get him fixed, I wouldn't be surprised if he carried on sneezing just for the attention. He's the only bunny we have that actually seems to like me cleaning him up.

Ahhhh, he obviously likes the attention from his bunny mummy :D

I know there is a technical name for winter depression and it has actually been proved humans suffer from it. Its not all that strange to think rabbits may suffer with it as wll?

Hope you enjoy your evening trip out :D and all goes well for you. Fingers crossed for a happy trip out.

We are thinking of you Bertie, please give us an update when you can :D

I cannot believe how many Forum Members have had to do vet visits in the past few days...it never rains but it always pours (pAWS!..okay, bad joke!!).....I keep double checking all the Sanctuary rabbits now, waiting for a cough or sniffle to erupt :? oh perish the thought
Best wishes, hope all went well at the Vets.

Ok, just got back. And we got the good bunny vet too, so we were in there ages while he prodded and poked the poor things.

Their lungs sound fine, no rattling. He checked Sheffield's eye with some fluorescent dye and all was well. Got him to give his teeth a check too, just in case, and they were fine. Because of the lack of other symptoms he said it was unlikely to be pasturella, but because of the eye snot he said there was definitely an infection. They're on baytril for the next 10 days, 14 if the sneezing doesn't stop by then. Overall, I'm quite happy. Obviously it's not good they have an infection, but it is good that it's not pasturella and it's equally good that I wasn't dragging them in over nothing.

Sheffield is in a jolly bad mood now though. He's sitting in the corner giving me the evil eye and he runs away if I come near. :(

Ungrateful sod. You know, there are people out there that pay good money to get their bums prodded at by strangers.

I know how you feel - Totts threw a right strop when we got back as well. Glad its nothing serious xx

Glad everything went well for you and your bun at the vets. I am going to have to take another trip to the vets and maybe mention infection. I doute it though as I am sure i would have know by now as it would have gotten worse - but its worth checking.

I would be greatful if anyone could tell me how to get in touch with a Specialist. I have tryed asking through my vets but they just said they would check my rabbit.

if you can get near him, give Sheffield a cuddle from me. glad he's home and it's nothing too serious.

He let me give him a head scratch just now, so he can't hate me too much. I'll sure he'll love me again come dinner time. His orange eye is a little disturbing though. :?

Toby - If your bunny isn't showing any other symptoms then there's probably nothing to worry about. As I understand it there's a lot of bunnies out there with weepy eyes and no other problems. But if he's going in for something else then it's always worth pestering your vet about anything that's worrying you. Get your money's worth, I say. :D

Pics please!

It's all washed out I think. I did ask the vet if he had red stuff instead for that extra evil glow.
