  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Scanning

Omi

Wise Old Thumper
I've noticed that Tui is occasionally scanning. I'm assuming that this is due to being a REW and is an indication that she has poor eyesight. I am not overly concerned by this as she seems to very easily compensate for any deficiency in her eyesight. She certainly is able to identify what's going on at an earlier stage than Tethra, especially where food is concerned

I would like to understand how this is caused. I guess it's an effect of albinism? Could anyone recommend any links to sites where we can read about the science of this, please?

Can’t help with links etc, but my bridge bun Boots was a REW and would scan, particularly if he was in new surroundings or if anything was moved around. As you say, it didn’t seem to affect him adversely at all, and I think his sense of smell was much better than any other rabbits I’ve had. He could smell a banana being peeled 2 rooms away

It's quite weird to watch isn't it :) I'm assuming that it's not something that will get worse in time, as I think it's caused by a deficiency due to albinism (which is why we'd like to understand how it's happening).

It is weird, yes. No, he never got worse, he hated anything being changed around in his room so once we realised, we would make sure to keep it exactly the same for him.
