Rabbit teeth filed but still not eating

I am going for a post op check up tonight and I will definitely request injectable penacillin, I have done a little bit of homework on it over the weekend ;) The wound is looking really good and healthy at the moment and he is eating a little on his own although he doesn't appear to be ready for pellets yet. My husband and I are on a rota at the moment to feed him and wash the wound every 6 hours.

My main concern is that his eye is still really bulging and inflamed and I am really worried that there is another abbess/more pus behind the eye :(

Will update after the vet :D

Good luck for tonight :)

There will be residual swelling, but if you can get him onto injectable penicillin then you're doing the very best to prevent this from recurring. The last thing you want for the poor wee mite is another operation.

Pellets are an up and down crunchy motion, so could aggravate any pain within the eye socket.

Is he still on Metacam?

Thanks :D He is on 0.5 ml once daily.

I have injectable penicillin! We have an appointment every day so that they can inject. She was suprised how well the wound looked and was just worried as his eye was very dry, it is still quite swollen and has a film over it. She has given us isotal eye drops for this which will hopefully help.

I'm glad to hear it! But what an ordeal you having to go in every day to get it injected.

Mostly a vet will give us a bottle and some needles and syringes and we do it ourselves. Mainly because it needs to go on for quite a while. But still, this is wonderful progress, well done you!

Did you have to work hard to convince?

I'm glad you got the penicillin.

Your vet / nurses should be able to show you how to do the injections yourself at home, which will be much less stressful and time consuming. Can you ask them to let you do i under supervision on your next few appointments, then just do it yourself?

The vet could either provide you with a full bottle which you draw up into syringes yourself, or they could give you pre-loaded syringes for maybe a week at a time. If you get a bottle, the syringes and needles are much cheaper if you buy them yourself online.

Just come back from the vet for our second P injection - I have persuaded them to hopefully let me inject myself at home next week. The bad news is his eye does not look any better and is very dry with an infection inside and most likely under the eye.

We are now looking at taking the eye out. Am I being selfish to put him through another operation? He has been very brave so far and I want to keep going because he is my mate but I don’t want to make him suffer 😫

Aww, sorry to hear about his eye :( My bun coped really well with eye removal. I'd put my bun through another op unless he told me no (I think we know when they've had enough). I don't view it too differently to human medical complaints while their quality of life is good

I am sorry about your recent news. Regarding whether you should put him through another op is really only for you to answer, together with advice from your vet. You know him better than anyone and in particular you know how he copes with medical intervention from recent experience. I think he will make it clear if he's had enough.

I'm sorry to ear this. Really upsetting for you :(

I should discuss with your vet how he reacted to the latest anaesthetic, and whether there were any issues with him coming round at all. If you can keep the eye moisturised, then you may give him a little more time to get over the previous anaesthetic/operation. It's important his immune system is functioning as best as possible before having another op.

Other than that, if he's strong and recovers well, then I would go for it :)

Hello Everyone. Thanks for the replies - this is what I wanted to hear I just didn’t want to put my boy through too much.

The wound from the abscess is healing nicely with no weeping or anything and everyone is surprised how well it has healed and how he has taken everything in his stride (I think he is a bit of a favourite at the vet as he comes when he is called and sits still when she asks him to to wash his eye and is very responsive). I am now injecting him at home with depocillin.

We have an appointment on Monday to have the eye removed, hopefully after that he will begin to eat normally again and we can focus on helping him heal and fattening him up again.

I hope he continues to do well and the operation on Monday goes smoothly. Sending lots of vibes xx

Sending lots more vibes for him. It's good that you are able to inject at home. I hope that his operation on Monday goes well.

He sounds like a super little character at the vets

You're amazing MrsBun. You've got the injections at home, that's fab, and now the little one doesn't have to keep going back to the vet for them.

Also, having the eye out will make an enormous difference. Having been in your shoes, it should mean the eating picks up as the pain and discomfort goes away. Brave little lad, millions of vibes to you both xx

The vet just rang me at work and said that she had rung a specialist and they had said that they would not recommend the surgery as it is most likely an abscess behind the eye and that removing it would not solve the issue, they have cancelled the appointment for Monday.

They have said that the only option at the moment is to hope that the penicillin will help it and that if it doesn't we will be looking at pts.

Its a lot of highs and lows this rabbit business
