Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bear is at the vets tonight...

Good news.

Bear has eaten some food overnight, not loads, but some. He has also poo'd 9 times and has been for a wee. We took in most of the "hutch accessories" (littertray etc) last night along with Cam (buddy) to try and settle him/get him back to normal which seems to have helped.

Hopefully have another update in a few hours... a positive one at that!

Ah really good news :D

Good news, bad news. Bear came home last night and seemed OK. He hopped around the garden a bit and are some dandelion.

Bad news, this morning he seems to be back to how he was pre-vet visit. I wonder if the painkillers hadn't worn off? Could be his teeth? I can't think what else it would be now...

Will probably be taking back to vet later.

Sorry to hear this. I have often found that a set back occurs just after they get home - I hope the vet can give you some encouragement as things are on the right track generally.

Vibes for Bear (and you)

Really difficult to say how long it will go on for. You can also tell the vet how much you can afford (I keep a tally of how much it costs) ...

Giving him fluids is one thing the vet can do, taking the glucose (good news about that) and syringe feed during the night.

Most vets will try and get rabbits home asap, as they know they are happier in a familiar environment :)

Thanks Max. Best course of action to take him back to the vets I guess?

He's teasing us... Was hoping to see a happy bun this morning. But he looks very grumpy again

Poor Bear & you. When you got him back from the vets was he was he eating enough by himself & pooing as normal. Was he prescribed any gut mobility drugs or pain relief to take home? I'd call your vets & see what they suggest. Good luck

Nothing bought home with us, he was given those drugs whilst at the vet though. Will ask the vet what they think. Unfortunately we are out a fair bit today so can't monitor him as much as we need to. So realistically best for him to be at vets for some undivided attention

Sending more vibes for Bear. I think you need to contact the vet again for advice and probably take him back in. It's unlikely that you would be able to get a second opinion over the weekend, but it's something to consider for Monday I think. It certainly seems a possibility that it's his teeth.

ETA Just seen your last update regarding no meds. He certainly needs to still be on medication, both for his gut and for pain relief.

Right, if you brought home no gut motility drugs for Bear then you definitely need to get back to your vet. He needs to continue on them until the problem has completely gone.

These would be:

Metacam
Metaclopromide
Cisapride
Ranitidine

Not all vets give Cisapride, but most will give all the others for a period of a few days.

Thanks Zoobec.

Unfortunately it looks like we live in a real black spot for those rabbit savvy vets and the one near us on that site is similar to the vets where we are currently taking him.

The vets have said they can send him to a rabbit specialist (as opposed to a general practitioner), I think a dental may be the best bet.

From the list of causes 'pain' is the only one left... And he's had an x-ray with no signs of physical damage anywhere so it must be coming from somewhere else.

Frustrating that he has spurs as we do all the right things to keep his teeth in good health, the boy eats from Timothyhay.co.uk..! :)

Fingers crossed

Have asked for the vet to call us back when they have a free spot. Reception said to bring him in but I'm hesitant to do that if we can administer these drugs at home...

Vet wants us to bring him in again to decide best course of action (unfortunately different vets work the weekend shift...).

So taking him in this after again

I'm really sorry to read that Bear has had a setback [emoji17] If he's not eating much and you'll be out most of the day I agree that the sensible thing would be to keep him at the vets so he can be monitored and syringe fed. When he's discharged again, as others have said above, make sure they give you pain relief and gut meds to administer at home. Also ask for a few sachets of recovery food as you may need to syringe feed him for a few days until he's eating normally again. It can be hard to predict how long a stasis episode will go on for. Sometimes my buns have recovered in a few hours, other times it has taken days. When my doe had a severe case of it she took almost two weeks to get better.

Sending lots of vibes for Bear xx

Sorry to hear this :(

I hope the vet gives fluids and does a blood glucose test.

Also, remember to ask about meds to bring home when he comes back :)
