Fran is going to the Bridge:(

Hi Rihanna
Sorry to hear you have a poorly bunny. It's horrible when they are so sore too. I just joined up to say that you can get a much thinner version of Sudocrem in a tube, goes on easier and less sticky. The other suggestion I have is to ask your vet if Cavilon would be suitable for Frangipan. I used to use it when I was nursing, it creates an invisible barrier on the skin, originally used for patients with colostomy bags to protect the skin from becoming sore with urine scald and repeated removal of said bags. Comes in a spray or wipes as I recall but was only on prescription then. Obviously check with your vet about all this but thought I would suggest it. I also found puppy pads with a cheap hand towel over it that could be washed and changed easily helped when one of my elderly bunnies became less mobile. The towel helped with grip as puppy pads can be quite smooth and slippery for some buns. Hope things get better soon

Thank you for the recommendations, and welcome to the forum

Wow thank you everyone for your suggestions. I will have a chat with my vet. It is grey and dismal here but not raining so I have put the buns outside. I gave Fran some metacam this morning as I thought she looked uncomfortable. I think continually bathing her is making it worst but I can't leave her fur soaked in urine. I will give it the weekend to see if the meds help and take her back next week for a review. She is still eating enthusiastically and is moving around, although more so outside than in the kitchen. She is such a gentle bun who tolerates the hand on care well, although she clearly does not like it. I think she knows I am trying to help her. I hope so.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before Karen but can she be shaved underneath? This would mean you wouldn’t need to bathe her as often and perhaps her skin would improve.

Thank you Mighty Max

Thank you, it's good to see so many options put forward that might help.

Thanks Catherine. The vet did do that when she first got urine scald but not this time. I will be taking her back next week - have just booked some overtime at 0600 Monday and am taking Fran back to see Dean at 1400. I owe £41 for the Rearguard I haven't picked up yet. I had no idea it was quite that expensive :(

Fran is still soaking underneath and has lost more weight. She is also unsteady on her feet. The weather has been awful here so she has been inside for the last couple of days. She is on panacur, baytril and metacam. I had an appointment this afternoon with the bunny savvy vet but he is off sick and they made me one with the vet she saw originally (I knew more about bunnies than he did). I know I am going to have to consider letting Fran go to Rainbow Bridge if things don't improve but I don't want a vet I don't trust to discuss that decision with. If the other vet isn't back tomorrow I will have to see a different one but I am hoping he will be.

Fran is still eating - tucking into spring greens at the moment. I have just cleaned them out and she has burrowed into the pile of hay. I hate seeing her so poorly and feel totally useless:(:(

It's so difficult especially when a rabbit is eating as if nothing is wrong. You have really tried to get her better.

I'm sorry if this has already been mentioned, but has the urine been sent off for bacterial analysis? It's not a Urinary Tract Infection is it? Baytril doesn't work for all of them and some vets try changing to Septrin which can work better.

Hugs for you xx

Have you thought of a consultation with JC, before making any decision?

Thanks, Babs. It is such a long way to drive and Fran shakes the minute I put her in a carrier and doesn't stop until I take her out. Having said that I will consider it if Dean (the bunny savvy vet) isn't back tomorrow. I had no faith whatsoever in the other vet I saw (when he checked the ultrasound he said that if Fran was a cat it would be slightly abnormal but he had nothing else to compare it with!!!!)

Dean does seem to know what he is doing and it is only a 10/15 min drive away. I still have JC's contact details - he may not be able to offer any other suggestions. I have just volunteered to do overtime tomorrow evening (Fran is spending money faster than I can earn it) but I am home all evening and all day tomorrow so I can keep an eye on her. The mint in my herb sink has suddenly taken off so she has some of that and strawberry tops along with her pellets for supper.

No it hasn't. She was treated for a urine infection originally before she was tested for EC. She is on the Baytril for her sore skin. The vet did mention a urine sample so I will try to collect one from her.

Thanks MM.

Worth excluding that I think. A urine sample would also indicate (but perhaps not conclusively) if there was any bladder sludge that was causing irritation/pain or repeat infections.

I collect a sample using a clean tray with no newspaper but just hay. I then scoop it up with a syringe and take it in to the vet :)

Your vet may be able to palpate the bladder and get a sample directly, but if Fran has just had a wee then this isn't possible.

Just got back from the vet. There were two vets there on placement who are specialising in eyes so they had a look at Fran and she has a cataract too, as if she hasn't enough to contend with:(

Fran urinated over the table and I suggested the vet took a sample before it was mopped up. He said it wasn't a sterile environment but my home isn't sterile either. He will do an inhouse test. Said that as she had had Baytril this morning it could affect the result if it was sent off. We are trying another antibiotic although he said Baytril was good if she does have a urine infection. I also have a spray to put on her sore bits once a week to try to discourage flies - not Rearguard - and some more shampoo for when I bathe her and a barrier cream to put on afterwards. He put that on the worst bits for me before I left the surgery.

She is still fighting but I am not going to let this continue for much longer. If this antibiotic doesn't work and she continues to be soaking underneath and sore I will have her put to sleep.

I put them all out in the garden earlier. They now have a tunnel to get into the hutch but it is too much of a step up for Fran so I put a ramp there and put her in the tunnel and put a brick the other end for her to step down into the hutch. When I went back outside she was coming down the ramp on her own. She is in the kitchen on her own now nomming on two types of mint, spring greens, oat hay and pellets. I will put the other two back before I go to work but wanted to be sure she was getting enough food.

She had a stain put in her eyes and was incredibly good. She is such a gentle, loving bun. I so want her to recover enough to enjoy the summer. Any spare vibes would be really appreciated. Today's bill was £130 without the eye drops (coming tomorrow). I am off to do some more overtime tonight but won't earn that much:(:(

Any bun I adopt from now in will be insured!!!!!!

I understand your position entirely. Things can't go on forever, and money is a serious concern as vet bills are something most of us have to face :(

I hope you manage to cope with it all.

Vibes for Fran and hugs for you xx
