Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Filavac - A question please

Does this vaccine take 2 weeks to become established meaning that the rabbit should not undergo a GA etc until after this time? I am asking for someone else.

Is this for Beapig?

Filavac becomes effective after 7 days (ie full immunity is reached then)

If Novibac vaccine is to be given, it's advisable to wait 14 days, but only because the efficacy of the vaccines hasn't been tested when given close together, and so it's a precaution. I guess it also protects the immune system by not having to deal with the onslaught of two vaccines in close proximity.

I hope this helps?

Thanks MM. No it's for Rosie, she had the Filavac today and has booked bunny in for neuter on Thursday. The Vet said this was ok. It isn't the 7 days though. Should it be ok?

Unless there's a specific urgent reason why the neuter needs to be done this week, personally I would rebook for 2 weeks after the vaccine. Filavac does take 7 days to develop immunity, but I would prefer the bun to have a good couple of weeks for their immune system and body to settle back down after a vaccination before doing any elective surgery. I would definitely not want it done within a week. It's one of those things where it would *probably* be alright, but would you want to take the risk? There's a chance that the rabbit's immune system will divert from producing antibodies and onto repairing after the neuter, so the bun might not develop a full immune response if it's done within the 7 days when immunity is developing.

I have known vets to give vaccinations on the same day as neutering. However, it's not something I would advocate unless it were really necessary, as I would prefer the immune response to be complete before subjecting a bun to another procedure.
