  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Any advice on dealing with bone cancer in bunnies?

tasha

New Kit
Today I unfortunately got the devastating news that my 6 and a half year old bun is suffering from a growth on his femur :(. Definitely not the news I was expecting as apart from an ever so slight limp on his right hind he is as happy, content and bouncy as ever.

I'm just looking for some advice if anybody has had to deal with this before? I've been given the option of amputation but as I haven't known many 3 legged rabbits I'm unsure whether this would be the best move to make. At the moment he's on a twice daily dose of Metacam but I know a difficult decision will have to be made once his quality of life begins to suffer.

I am sorry to hear about your Bunny. What diagnostics has the Vet done to establish the diagnosis of osteosarcoma ? I assume Xray,CT scan, biopsy and blood tests ?

I have had Rabbits who have had to have a leg amputated, although not due to Osteosarcoma. Many Rabbits can cope on 3 legs, but it really is a case of needing to judge each case individually, there are so many factors to take into account.

A bit more information here regarding limb amputation :

Very best wishes for whatever you decide for your Rabbit xx

Hi Tasha and welcome to the Forum

Can you let me know how the vet diagnosed the issue? Are they 100% sure it's bone cancer?

I have known several three-legged rabbits and they do absolutely fine, but it's not a decision to be taken lightly by any means. The disabled Rabbits site is a mine of info, and worth having a look around and asking questions before you go ahead with amputation:
