The Plumpkin Thread - Spay Tuesday 12th

She's lucky to have come into your care.

Our dentals cost around £300 each time without bloods.... Definitely give them a call and ask for an estimate so you know roughly what you're looking at.

Wowee, £300 is pretty steep! The vet made it clear that it wasn't optional, and if her teeth are causing her pain then the price is irrelevant to me (lucky I have savings haha), I will probably call up anyway just to get an idea.

I'm going to text her previous owner, as I still have her number on my phone, and tell her about what's going on. Because she still has at least 2, if not 4 rabbits in her 'care', and this simply isn't good enough.

I told the whole story to the vet and his response was so casual. I wonder if it's because they see so much neglect, they just become desensitized to it? In fact, he told me he has seen much worse urine scald than Plumpkin had. Makes me so sad :(

I have a rabbit specialist who does 'conscious dentals' so I pay only a consult fee of around £35.

However, I have had dental work done on a rabbit with GA from my usual vet and it obviously costs more, without an X-ray (my vet often thinks that they don't contribute anything and doesn't routinely do them).

Good luck with the dental :)

Thank you for the good vibes, MM and everyone else who has commented <3

I'm actually really worried that Plumpkin is going downhill. She seems lethargic and is eating very little. I gave her a big pile of herb robert and dandelions this morning which she turned her nose up at. She has since had a piece of kale and a small amount of cauliflower leaf.

She tends to stay in the same place in her hutch all day with her eyes closed, and when she does move her joints are really stiff and she hardly goes far. She's always grinding her teeth and just seems blue in general. What's more, her poops seem smaller and black. She won't eat hay or grass, which is so essential to their diet of course.

The vet told me he had seen much worse, but that doesn't give me a lot of comfort.

I'm actually really tempted to call the RSCPA - I sent a long text to the previous owner telling her how unwell she is and that she needs an op, the woman didn't reply. She still has 5 rabbits under her 'care' and now (locked all day in 2ft hutches the last I saw) I'm starting to question whether her 'ignorance' was just a facade for intentional neglect.

It would be pretty obvious that it was me who called if the RSPCA show up at her door.

Any thoughts?

I think if you have concerns then you have to act on them. The RSPCA might not take much notice, but at least you'll know that you've done everything in your power to improve the lives of those bunnies. I hope Plumpkin starts to feel a bit better soon x

Poor Plumpkin. It sounds as though her mouth hurts. If that's all she's eaten today, her poos are black and smaller plus she seems lethargic, I really think she needs to see a vet asap. The symptoms you've described suggest that she is going into Stasis, so she will need some gut meds plus some pain relief. The vet might also suggest that you syringe-feed her.

Sending her lots of vibes.

I agree with Omi's advice about contacting the Vet ASAP. Sending lots of vibes for Plumpkin xx

So sorry to hear about Plumpkin.

I'm sure you've seen this, but it sounds like she could have the beginnings of stasis?

Thank you everyone for the advice. I have indeed been concerned that she has stasis.

Here's an overview right now:

I have no idea of what diet she was being fed at her old home. I'm going to guess a poor diet. She hasn't eaten any hay since I brought her home with me about a week ago, but my guess is that she's never been given it and has no idea that she's meant to eat it. My buck Hamilton was a similar story - confined to a hutch day in and day out, with no idea about how to be a bunny :( He only learnt to eat hay when he was bonded with Beatrice, who was given away to me for free but was clearly well looked after and loved her hay from day one.

Plumpkin has perked up since this morning and is now tucking into a big pile of grass with a bit of coriander and kale mixed in. I've mixed some hay in too, to try and give her the idea. I'm monitoring her very closely, and if I have even the slightest fear that she's at risk I will call the vet immediately.

It's hard to judge in many ways, because rabbits aren't vocal in the way that say cats are, but I think she might actually just be quite depressed. For so long she was confined to a space so small that she could hardly move, it doesn't surprise me.

I've been debating moving her setup a bit closer to Ham and Bea - I'm wondering if seeing other rabbits might perk her up. Although maybe it will just stress her out. Hamilton and Beatrice are very aware that she's about 4 metres away and they always act excitedly when they see her moving about.

I'm also with Omi. But here's my thoughts- if this was a child neglect, would you hold back on reporting it to social services? As difficult as it is, I think you need to make that call to rspca although they may take plumpkin as potential evidence. It does sound like she needs to be checked by a vet and I do hope that you are able to get some resolution. She's a beautiful rabbit and has clearly suffered and deserves the love and care you are clearly giving her. Sending you lots of vibes x

This is very true Craig. I think you're right. I came away from the situation feeling positive and like the owners took my advice on board, but since they didn't reply to my message when I told them Plumpkin has to have an operation, I now feel very cynical and wonder what will happen to the other bunnies.

I'm going to call up the vet for a chat to see if her operation can be moved forward, because I am concerned that she is in discomfort. Poor girl, she deserves so much better :(

How are things today?

I hope that you can get her to the vets ASAP. When Frosty needed a dental they did it the next day, only to allow time to get his guts moving properly, and the transformation in him was amazing.

Sorry to be getting back to you guys late on this! We took her back to the vet first thing today, and as I suspected, things are much worse than originally made out. The vet we saw last week was not our regular vet - he was younger and didn't seem so clued up on rabbits. I didn't feel too reassured by his assessment of her being 'not in bad health overall'.

Our regular vet today (who is super experienced and amazing) stressed that she is extremely underweight, and when he looked into her mouth he told me that it's terrible terrible. Because she's been fed a rubbish diet and not enough in general, the lack of calcium has actually caused her jaw to permanently disfigure and now her teeth, which are overgrown as it is, are growing wonky and causing her a lot of pain.

So rather than going for her dental on the 25th as the vet last week dictated, she is in first thing tomorrow for an emergency operation. In the meantime she's had pain meds to keep her a little more comfortable.

I'm feeling really angry and upset you guys. How could someone do this to her? She looks like an elderly rabbit but she's just a year old. It makes me so sad/angry at the same time. Her op tomorrow will be £100 and due to the permanent disfigurement, the vet says she'll need her teeth filed regularly throughout her life to stop the same thing from happening again.

To make matters worse, I got home in an emotional fluster (I was almost in tears leaving the vet) and dropped my phone, smashing the screen to smithereens. It's a reasonably new, expensive phone and I rely on it to operate my business. So to say the least, I'm feeling pretty down tonight! Please send good vibes to my girlie <3

What a terribly sad story :(

Loads of vibes for her and hugs for you. You are doing such a good thing, I hope all goes well xx

Poor Plumpkin  I hope after her op she will be feeling much better, sending lots of vibes for her xx

Poor Plumpkin :( Sending loads of vibes for her op tomorrow. I hope that the pain relief has made her feel more comfortable. Is she eating any better?

I'm so sorry to read how badly poor Plumpkin is suffering [emoji17] I'm glad she's been seen by your usual vet and that she's having the op done tomorrow. Hopefully that will help the poor mite eat more comfortably.

I don't blame you for being angry with her previous owner. This is yet another case of an animal suffering because of ignorance or sheer neglect and it's decent people like you who have to pick up the pieces. Although in all honesty, given the wealth of information available I really don't think ignorance is an acceptable excuse any more.

Lots of vibes for tomorrow xx

I share your frustration, anger and emotions regarding the beautiful Plumpkin. On the positive side, it seems your usual vet has found the major cause for your concerns and you at least have a more definitive prognosis. The downside is clearly the proof now that there has been considerable and deliberate emotional and physical harm done to such a harmless and gentle rabbit who is clearly in some discomfort. I guess it's entirely wrong to voice how I truly feel about how wrong all this is but I have little doubt that all of us following this will feel and share how you must feel.
My first and majority thoughts and prayers go to Plumpkin for her op tomorrow and I do hope she pulls through the op and it goes successfully. It's the least she deserves and at least she has a loving supportive home and owner to go back to. I also hope you found the strength to contact the rspca because you now have tangible supportive evidence should they decide to open a case. Please let us know how Plumpkin is tomorrow and sending tons of vibes for her.
