Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Unwanted french lop issues

Becky92

Young Bun
I agreed to take on a male french lop who has been neglected subsequently has behaviour problems. He has a BRC ring which I have booked him in to have be removed , overgrown nails and now discovered fur problems. After a 30 min battle of attacking he gave in allowing me to groom him he very dry/dandruff debris under his fur could this just down to lack of care?

It could be due to fur mites. These can occur when a Rabbit is somewhat under par, in a Rabbit who has Dental problems or any type of mobility problem that may make it difficult for him/her to groom him/herself

Hi Becky

A rabbit often gets fur mites when their immune system is a it depleted. If you believe he's been lacking care then this could be the cause of them.

You can get over the counter meds for that, but your vet will identify for sure and give the correct dosage per rabbit.

The normal treatment for mites is ivermectin:

poor poor baby! but well done for taking him in, and giving him a second chance.

The dandruff could well be mites if has been been poorly looked after, as this will look like white dandruff in his fur? Any chance you can take him to the vets? so he can get mite treatment which will probably be ivermectin and they can help cut his nails?

If not, you can also by mite treatment in pet shops? and will normally need a couple of treatments.

Thankyou for the responses

I've posted you some helpful links as not everyone on here uses Facebook

Is he neutered? Why I ask is the Vet might have to sedate him to cut through the ring and if he isn't neutered you could have the 2 things done at the same time, so he doesn't have to have another anaesthetic. The vaccinations need to be done either before or after the neuter, not at the same time. You need 2 - 3 weeks between vaccinations and neuter. The reason is, having a neuter will lower his immune system and the vacs might not become effective and as it looks like he could have mites so his immune system is already low. I would work on the mites and getting him in a stronger position to have a GA.

He's not neutured as far as I'm aware. He was kept in a tiny guinea pig cage and not bothered with, perhaps why he eats so ravenously so hoping to get him in good health and weight before I opt for that I hoping the BRC ring will give his true age too. Neutering would be good as I know it would help his temperament 😊

Thankyou iv never heard of those mites will do some research. I'm tempted to get some ivermectin if he's in pain with mites it could be adding to his serious dislike to being touched , dreading the vets visit but needs must!

Having mites is not painful, just uncomfortable I suppose. A lot of rabbits don't like being touched.
