Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Recommendations for insurance please!

Hello!

I'm new to the forum, and due to pick up my little guy tomorrow morning!

I'm looking to get insurance arranged today but wanted to get some advice about the best places to go, and what sort of price I can be looking at. For some reason I thought that it would be a lot more common now to find pet insurance companies that cover rabbits but can't seem to find many?

Any help would be appreciated :)
Thanks, Jo

Hi Jo,

You’re definitely right to get insurance. My bunnies are insured with helpucover and they pay up to £2000 on treatment per year. When my last bunny was referred to a specialist with a middle ear infection and they paid the fees with no issues. They don’t cover you for the first 14 days so get it started asap. Also if there are any existing medical conditions they won’t cover them so best to get it done immediately. I don’t think they cover dental but I’m not sure whether any do. The price was about £6.50 to start but it did go up a bit each year as she got older.

Pet plan are the top leading.

They cover dentals provided bunny has a dental check every 12 months.
It's £2,000 per condition, per year. So say bunny gets 3 separate conditions they'll pay up to £6,000 in total (only £2,000 per condition though).

Mine is £30 per month for a pair of rabbits.
They pat out right away and I've never had issues claiming. Because they're such a trusted company most vets will deal with them directly.

The thing to know about help u cover that I found in their small print is that they don't cover dentals until after the 2nd year of cover, and bunny still needs yearly dental checks.

Good to know. I have 2 bunnies and one has frequent gas issues so probably won’t be covered if I change but will look into moving the other one as she’s never had any health issues. I might give them a call and ask.

PetPlan all the way for me! They pay the vet direct and given how many times we've had to claim for Thumper for GI stasis, they still keep paying out as they "cover for life". We pay £28 per month for 2 bunnies, which is excellent considering the claims we've made for Thumper over the last 5 years - one year she actually went over her £2,000 maximum. Because of their age (7 this year) their excess goes up and presently it's £65 per condition, but that's nothing when we've claimed £300 for one claim - the price soon goes up when you need an emergency overnight vet - the excess is a drop in the ocean!

Coco is currently undergoing tests and aside from her excess it's a case of "do what you need to" because we know she's covered. It's a fabulous feeling to know that money isn't really an issue.

My Petplan policies read: "Veterinary expenses: £2,000 per policy year" (not per condition). I've had the policies 7+ years so I don't know if they've changed since, maybe?

Any illnesses noted on the veterinary notes won't be covered. Even if it's never been treated - just FYI x

Mine is due for renewal so I'll double check the wording when the paperwork comes though.

I believe the PetPlan covered for life policy is £2,000 vet cover per year, so you have a pot of money that all conditions claimed for would dip into, rather than being per condition. I would still go for PetPlan if I were going to insure rabbits :)

Thank you all for your replies - I will get him registered with Petplan ASAP I think!

Ah yes. You're correct. I'm remembering a different policy type that they offered many moons ago.

So it's £2,000 per year. As someone else described it - Like a pot of money.
