Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Not eating again

Hi guys,

My bun Freddy stopped eating yesterday so I got him to the vet at lunchtime. Apparently he has a small mouth ulcer (no GI stasis thank god) so she gave him a injected painkiller and sent us on our way with some critical care. She said if he doesn't improve by today then he'll have to stay overnight with them and have fluids.

He had all the critical care, a bunch of parsley, and by 9pm he was eating his pellets of his own accord. Got up this morning to give him breakfast and he ate a couple of pellets before turning his nose up at them and going back to his litter tray.

I've got a follow up appointment for him at 11am this morning. I don't know if he's just in pain because I'm assuming the pain killer has worn off by now, or if it's something more serious.

Anybody had anything similar happen? I'm not sure if I should be preparing myself for him having to have an overnight stay.

It sounds like he needs a dental.

I'd suggest finding a rabbit savvy vet - it doesn't sound as if yours really is.

Sounds like a dental is needed to me too, as DP says. My bunny went off his hay and grass etc yesterday, he would only eat pellets and picked at other stuff. He has a sore mouth and a couple of spurs, he had metacam painkiller last night, emeprid to get his tummy going, and I had recovery food for overnight, he was back in first thing this morning for his dental. By this morning I could tell the painkiller had worn off. Best to act quickly as they can go downhill fast.

She did check his teeth. I'm not disagreeing with anyone btw but I've been taking old fred to this vet for the past 10 years without a issue. I think they are definitely rabbit savvy. He had a dental 2 years ago (spurs), my first thought when he stopped eating was his teeth. So when I went to the vet the first thing I mentioned was to check for spurs. She checked and said they don't need doing at the moment.

I'm setting off to the vet in about half an hour so I'll get them to recheck again just incase, thanks for the input all :)

Hi there and sorry to hear about Freddy.

Yes, as the others have said, it sounds like dental to me too. A vet can't see the back teeth properly with an otoscope unless they do 'conscious dentals', whereby they can treat the teeth without anaesthesia.

Did the vet say what had caused the mouth ulcer?

Hi all. Saw the head vet this time (our usual person) and he's spotted a spur and lots of salaiva in the area. So he's staying overnight for dental work (same as it was 2 years ago) he'll come home tomorrow at lunch time with some painkillers and hopefully a happy mouth!

Ah great news :D

Good luck Freddy
