Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Fur Not Growing Back On Rabbit's Ear

Captain, my 7 year old mini lop, had an operation on his teeth around 2 months ago. Before the surgery, the vets shaved part of the fur on his ear off. This fur hasn't grown back, at all. I'm really not sure why, as the rest of his coat is lovely and thick!

Hello and welcome to the forum :).

Thumper's fur hasn't grown back on her ears either, in fact she has several scars from where she's had lines put in, bless her. You may find that Captain has short stubby fur rather than a proper covering (Thumper does) :(. I don't know why the fur doesn't grow back properly.

Hi there and welcome to the Forum

It happens! Has Captain had these type of operations before and has the fur always grown back afterwards?

Rabbit's fur doesn't grow like human hair - you may find he has to get to the stage of a 'moult' and then the hair may grow back. That could be as long as a few months though.

As it has been so cold I doubt that Captain has had a moult in the 2 months since his op'. Rabbit fur does not grow continuously, it only grows as part of a moult. So the fur on his shaved ear probably wont grow til' Captain has his next moult.

I hope that he does not require ongoing Dental treatment x

One of my rabbits has a bald patch and it's been there for many months. I think sometimes the follicles are damaged and that prevents regrowth.

My bridge bunny Billy had to have his ears shaved as a youngster as the result of an episode of EC. 7 years later and the fur had never really grown back properly. So much so the outer edges of his ears were near enough bald. Those adorable velvet like ears still made for good rubbing though

Captain's ears have gone through a lot! That same ear was bitten by a rat some months ago, whilst being looked after by a family member. He had a puncture hole and a terrible lump!

Thank you! I see what happens when he begins moulting.
