Thank you everyone, and Jane, you made me laugh

Ended up at the out-of-hours vet with Thumper this evening as she was showing no signs of improvement and was quite cool to the touch - no mean feat given the thickness of her fur! Seriously, I could feel how cold she was through her body fur, not just her ears. So off we popped at about 7.45. My son came with me for company, coming off his PC game without hesitation - he's a good lad . Niamh would have come but given she's under the weather and I want her well for tomorrow and bed is the best place, I asked my husband to ensure she was in bed early - the last time we went to the OOH vet with the rabbits at 7.30pm we didn't get home until 11!

Anyway, we were seen fairly quickly and Thumper was indeed cold - 35 degrees instead of around 37.5. Her heart was beating like a train through both pain and fear, and her guts which had been gurgling were now disturbingly quiet. So off Ed popped with her to give her 2 lots of pain relief and some gut stimulant. He was gone ages, but they usually are there. He did weigh her first - I guessed/memory 2.6kg. I wasn't far off, 2.5! I know my bunnies!

While he was gone I'd remembered that the last time she was ill they'd also given her subcutaneous fluids so when he came back I asked if he could administer those too - he apologised for not suggesting it himself so disappeared again. Thumper was not impressed! But upon her return and put back into her carrier with her sister, she started eating! (I always pop a handful of hay in the carrier). Ed was chuffed as well, and she carried on eating throughout and hasn't stopped since, so I'm really relieved. We were home for 9.30 - has to be a record!

I'll keep them indoors - I had the foresight as I thought she was cold, to bring them inside at around 4pm as it's warmer and easier to keep an eye on them - tomorrow and then they can go back out on Sunday. Besides, I won't really have time to mess around tomorrow morning anyway, don't want to put them back out at teatime as it's a bit late/cold after being inside all day, and one more day inside won't do them any harm at all.

So just got to hope Niamh's cold hasn't got any worse by tomorrow. Had an email from the organisers to say it's poured down the last couple of days so "runners are expected to get very muddy so bring a change of clothes". To be honest, clothes already are in a bag as I had an inkling they'd get wet as I think one of the sections of the course involves a foam pool (wet foam, not lumps of foam), but I have to admit I'd not envisaged mud!

Logging off now to relax, had a rotten day but paws and fingers crossed I think Thumper's on the mend and with luck Niamh will be okay.

What a day!

That's really encouraging about Thumper! Well done you for asking about the fluids. I hope her temperature has come back up to normal now.

And good luck for Niamh :)

What a day!

I really hope that Thumper will be in fine form this morning !! SQ fluids can be a huge benefit to a Rabbit in gut stasis and my Vet now always advises me to administer them as well as the usual prokinetics and analgesia.

Vibes that both Bunnies will stay as well as possible now and that Niamh will still be able to take part in the event today. Not sure if you drink, but if you do I'd have a bottle of wine on standby for this evening !!

I'm so glad to read that Thumper has now improved. I hope that Niamh does well today and doesn't get too muddy.

Hi everyone, Thumper was in fine fettle and back to her normal self yesterday morning, which was very much a relief all round :).

Sadly, Niamh still was unwell and given it was pouring with rain chose to stay in bed while Connor and I went to the event on our own.

We were very disappointed. We expected it to be a very long, inflatable course as that was how it was described "the world's longest inflatable assault course". No, it really wasn't. There were a number of inflatables dotted along the course but it was also through fields which due to high rainfall the previous couple of days, were thick with mud - runners already taken place were literally covered in the stuff and the youngsters were - again literally - splashed up to their necks in it, didn't look very happy and quite a few were in tears (and not many people did look happy to be honest). Connor took one look and said "this isn't what I signed up for" and said he didn't want to do it - and it was still pouring with rain as well, which didn't help. So he didn't. I needed the loo and while in the queue I spoke to a couple of other women who also said they'd expected one long course of inflatables and no fields, and told them I was going to complain.

I was fuming as I felt it had been mis-advertised, mis-sold, and I felt like it was a con, so I was all ready to fire off a complaint and demand my money back.

I checked the terms and conditions again today as nowhere in there did it state anything about running through fields, but then I happened to find, quite by chance, a video someone had taken of it from 2016 where they'd worn a Go Pro. It clearly showed them running through a field and then onto various inflatable obstacles, not one long course. A quick look at their Facebook site (which I hadn't evidently had the brains to check before I booked the tickets) showed an aerial view of the course - field, obstacle, field, obstacle ... so basically I couldn't complain as I wouldn't have a leg to stand on. So I have no-one to blame but myself. I've lost £70 - well, £35 actually as Niamh was unwell. Had it been not raining then Connor may have had a go even if he'd not gone all of the way around, but on his own given his sister wasn't well, wouldn't have been much fun anyway. *sighs. Lesson learnt - he's already said he won't be asking to do it next year!

So I'm 75 quid lighter in total, inc. parking (though it all goes to various charities - but I wouldn't have given that much to charity regardless of what charities they were) and can't complain about bad advertising because I should have researched it better.

On the bright side, Thumper's better . She won't come near me, but she's better! And Niamh is slightly better today than she was yesterday, so that's great too :).

In fact, I'd best go do the rabbits' heat pads as they're late getting them now!

Oh bummocks what a disappointing day out. And it was not exactly cheap either which adds insult to injury !

I hope that Niamh will soon be 100% better and next year I suggest you do a traditional old fashioned Easter Egg hunt at home !!

I'm glad that Thumper is OK now and I hope that all will go well for Coco's op' xx

We do one every year :) Niamh's still quite into them as she's only 14, but my son not so much as he turns 18 in May, although he still likes the goodies .

Yeh, I can imagine an 18 year old fella may not want to admit to enjoying an Easter Egg hunt !

I hope that Thumper and Coco are doing OK now and that Niamh's cold is much better. I also hope she has not been kind enough to share the cold with her Mum !

Hope things are improving for you all round now Angie and that you don't now come down with anything

Thank you both x

Yes, both bunnies are doing well though they refuse to eat out of my hand but will eat the 3 or 4 morning pellets out of their bowl - I think they think I'm going to grab them; can't blame them I suppose. But they're eating and behaving normally so that's the main thing :), and they'll come round and befriend me again in due course (just in time for Coco to have her GA for xrays and start the process of falling out with me all over again :(.)

And Niamh's recovered too, thank you, and not so far shared any germs, yaay! And they are just about sharing chocolate too, so double yaay .

In fact, Niamh and I are popping into town this afternoon for an hour or so, which will be a nice potter around :). She was due to go with her friend, but she thinks her friend has been grounded for some reason, oh dear!

After a pause, which has included more examinations and a further ultrasound, Filip (normal vet) has decided that Coco needs to be seen by his friend who is an expert in exotics after all and he is based in York which is around 1.5hrs away from us - so that journey alone will be stressful for the rabbits, although I hope they will settle in the car but I doubt it.

Mark (exotic specialist) will examine Coco thoroughly and of course he's spoken to Filip who has also passed on all the x-rays to him. He will then decide whether to x-ray Coco himself, under sedation, and whether or not to operate. Filip doesn't want to operate as it's "out of my comfort zone" unquote, as he's more of a general practitioner whereas Mark's far more experienced and qualified.

It could be that Mark decides Coco doesn't need surgery. But it could be that he decides she does - if so he'll do it there and then.

Appointment booked for May 8th.

My husband's coming too as it's too far for me to go on my own and I'll be too nervous and if the worst happens ... well, I'll need company either way!

Fingers and paws crossed all goes to plan :).

I hope that it all goes well and that they travel better than you fear. In my experience of long journeys with bunnies (fetching from rescue) they’ve actually settled after a little while and travelled fine. And that includes my bridge pair of half wildie buns who hated human contact!

Sending lots of vibes:thumb:

I hope it all goes well for Coco. I can understand how you feel about the journey and stressing the rabbits, but it does sound as though she will get excellent treatment. I can also understand why you would not want to drive yourself for something like this.

Sending lots of vibes for her.

Sounds like a very good plan :)

Company is always a good thing. It's exhausting managing everything on your own.

I always respect a vet for not attempting anything they are uncomfortable with.

Good luck for her appointment :)

Thank you everyone x

I should be able to update you on Tuesday but it'll probably be late as we'll settle the rabbits in at whatever-o'clock and chances are that will be indoors to keep an eye on them both given the long journeys and upheaval, and of course surgery. If not, it'll be Wednesday, but later as it's my husband's birthday on Wednesday and I'd like us to go out - if he wants to of course, it's his day not mine!
