  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Is your Rabbit on any treatment at all at the moment ?

For arthritis treatment often includes a non steroidal anti-inflammatory such as Metacam. Additionally acupuncture and cold laser therapy can be beneficial. My Vet offers both :

Thanks for the links Jane, very useful. Lady isn't on any meds at present, but I think she is getting to the stage where she needs something. She is still active and can jump but she just favoures one hind leg at times, she sits normal, she will lie or sit with all her weight on it and she keeps herself clean etc. I havent noticed her teeth grinding. She is a difficult rabbit to handle and very territorial she was found as a stray and taken to a rescue no idea of her age she has been with me 4years, I gave her a home because of her unfriendly nature, she will a nose rub and thats it.

That's OK. Even though she has always been a bit mardy it may be that this becomes more of an issue if she is in some discomfort now.

Has the Vet actually diagnosed arthritis ? As I expect you are aware, there are other possible causes of hind leg problems

Might be difficult to medicate her when the time comes. But at least meds can be put on a piece of bread or a malted shreddie which always sends them down fast enough :)

That's what has crossed my mind MightyMax, I took my life in my hands the other day to cut her nails, made more difficult because they are just black like the rest of her. Luckily she was in a good mood at the time😉🐇

Jet black nails? No problem :)

I shine a flashlight underneath and see the quick really easily. I always cut nails alone, so what I do is find the quick, put a 'marker' with my thumbnail and then cut just the other side of it. Never had it go wrong yet ......

We have to get inventive with these guys

Assuming it is Arthritis, Metacam is very tasty so you won't have any problems once she is used to taking it. My Roo is a grumpy bum who doesn't like me, but she comes over for her dose of Metacam and tries to suck it out of the syringe, I only have to push the plunger.
