  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Two bunnies... Two problems...

Hi all,

Cam - Appears to have a bit of matted fur around her rear end. Should be fixed by clipping I assume? This came on over night.

More worryingly, bear has stopped eating. He won't take pellets or food from us. Think we're going to phone to vets now to try and get him fixed.

There's a local outbreak of RHD2 (Lichfield), he has had a vaccine but is about a month from renewal so hoping its not that.

Boo :(

Oh dear, I am sorry to hear that you have concerns about both of your Rabbits. I think you are definitely doing the right thing by contacting the Vet now. As you know, 'not eating' is a big deal for a Bunny and prompt Veterinary attention is always essential.

If Cam has a 'mucky' bum that may be indicative of a dietary or health problem, so I'd get the Vet to examine her too. Clipping the fur certainly makes it easier to clean the Bunny. But it is important to try to ascertain why they are getting mucky in the first place as it's not 'normal'.

Good luck at the Vets x

Hi Chris

The more serous one first ... I hope you manage to get a vet appointment for Bear. It's the weekend and best to get it sorted whilst the vet might still be open. The out of hours vet may not be so knowledgable.

There's some info on stasis here:

As for Cam, yes clipping the fur very carefully is the way to go. Some 'semi long haired' rabbits have this problem just by sitting and jumping into hay. Is the back end messy with poo or is it just matted fur?

It might be an idea to show the vet and perhaps the nurse can clip it down for you and show you how to keep it under control.

Good luck for today xx

Bear appears to be eating now - must have just been a weird turn. We'll keep a close eye on him and make sure it's not a bigger problem. May be because we woke him up for food and he wasn't ready for breakfast..!

Re Cam we'll try to give her a clip.

Cheers all
