Poorly sick bun advice needed

So here's the story, my 6 year old bun (Mr waffle) went to be bonded with a new friend a week ago. He was there (as rescue centre) for 3 days before I asked to bring him home. He's a house bun and was in a cage in a wooden office (a big shed) for the bonding period. He got home and settled in well Sunday/Monday but on Tuesday I woke up and he had an upset tum. Took him straight to the vets where he got a wash, fluids directly into his tummy as he was so dehydrated, rescue food and meds to have 3 times a day. Took him back Wednesday as he still wasn't doing good, got more fluids, more rescue food and he hadn't lost weight. Took him today for a check up... More rescue food and now antibiotics. He's not eating, drinking, not really moving and the vet said he has colitis. How long should I expect Mr waffle to be poorly for? He's lost weight since his trip to the vet Wednesday. I'm feeding him a pouch of rescue food a day along with all his medicine and the vet said she thinks he is nibbling at food as his belly doesn't feel as empty. Poop is still full of mucas and runny (and very smelly!) but on the plus side, he did have a little, very tiny, drink from a bowl tonight. Really worried he won't come through as he's not himself at all. It's been 4 days now, should he not be improving?
I have also put him in a different cage to the new bun as she's younger and a bit of a pain while he wants space, the vet said to give him as much of a stress free environment as possible. I feel awful for sending him away to make a friend now that he's come home and got so sick :-(

Hello, I am sorry to hear that your Rabbit is so unwell. Are you in the UK ?

When you say that Mr Waffle has an 'upset tum' do you mean that he has actual diarrhoea ? Or do you mean that he has stopped eating and pooing -ie 'Gut Stasis' ?

Has your Vet got a lot of experience in treating Rabbits ? Whilst some Vets may be excellent regarding their knowledge about other domestic pets they may lack in depth knowledge of 'Exotics', in Veterinary Medicine Rabbits are classified as 'Exotics'.

If your Rabbit has diarrhoea, is still not eating or moving then he really needs to be hospitalised. He would need fluids via IV and also IV medication. He would probably need to be in an incubator too as he could be struggling to maintain his body temperature.

If he has 'Gut Stasis' then the Vet needs to have established whether or not he has a full GI tract obstruction. Diagnostics would include a blood glucose test ( a high blood glucose level is indicative of a GI tract obstruction) and also an abdominal Xray.

Given that he has also spent time in the Rescue the chance of him contracting coccidiosis cannot be ruled out.

Sending lots of get better vibes for Mr Waffle. Jane gave you a lot of good information. You did not mention if he was getting any pain meds which may help him to feel better until be improves.

I am so sorry to hear of mr waffle. Have you told the Rescue Centre of what's happened in case they can shed any light on it?

Thank you so much for all of the info. Took a while to find my post again!!

The vet is pretty good as she has lots of buns herself. The first day he had diarrhea, now it's very sloppy mucas filled poo (which is pretty disgusting I know!) He's been out back on rescue food today and he has been to the vets 3 days in a row as he was severely dehydrated when he got back from the place the new bun came from.

I have to go and pick up the big bull stock of rescue food tomorrow and if he's not better Monday it's bloods, teeth check and x-ray. I thought I wasn't doing a nice thing getting him a friend and I feel like I've just made him sick.

I don't know how to say to the place "I think you have made my rabbit sick!" I wasn't going to email them. He was very dehydrated when he came home and ended up on fluids at the vets for 3 days. Vet thinks it may be stress of leaving here to be bonded and then having a new friend and also, he was greedy with his veg when he got home - like he hadn't eaten for days. Hopefully he'll improve. I'm becoming a master at syringe feeds!! X
 
He's on pain meds, antibiotics and 2 lots of meds to keep his tummy working at the moment. He also sleeps on a heat pad to keep him comfy. Fingers crossed he starts to improve soon. Vet said 7-10 days and we are on day 7 today x

Mr waffle unfortunately passed away last night. Took him to the vets again as he had gone down hill very quickly Friday afternoon and he was due back this morning to be put to sleep. I wanted to do everything possible so instead of having him in the vets over night on his own I agreed to syringe him water every 20 minutes throughout the night but 20 Minutes after we arrived home he died snuggled in my lap in the living room. Was incredibly sad and very hard to watch. He didn't make any noise. Just went. The vet didn't think he was in pain and said I couldn't have done anymore but I can't help feeling like I could have. Didn't know how much I loved him until the past 10 days. I would have done anything to make him better. My poor waffie :-(

Oh I am so very sorry. Mr Waffle will have found great comfort from you and I really dont think that you could have done any more for him. He was obviously a very sick Bunny :cry:
