Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lump by eye

Alicia

Mama Doe
Izzy has a lump by her eye it’s right on her bottom eyelash line (if that makes sense) she doesn’t seem to mind me touching it but it’s fairly hard. Any idea what it could be? It’s black, but all round her eyes is black too and always has been. She’s still not great with her movement, she just fell over and didn’t even try to get up  I had to pick her up and cuddle her for a bit and then she got going again. The vet is still convinced it’s a problem with her ears so Izzy’s got ear cleaner and drops but I’m not sure how much it’s doing. Feel like I’m fighting a losing battle with Izzy but this eye lump is a new thing

Oh dear poor Izzy is in thw wars lately isn't she  The only way to find out what the eyelid swelling/lump is is to get the Vet to take a look. It's impossible to give you a definitive answer from just a description posted here. There are several possibilities and most can be easily treated. As Izzy does not seem to be responding to her ear treatment then another Vet check sounds to be needed for that too. If her tympanic membranes (ear drums) are not intact any more it may be that putting drops into her ears is actually exacerbating the problem regarding her balance.

So in short my advice would be to take Izzy back to the Vet today.

Good luck xx

I didn’t take her at the time because of the snow. I’m not sure whether to take her or not as its not bothering her and hasn’t changed at all. The last time I went to the vet the vet said that she’s quite old, and I’m worried there’s not much they can do with her now. If it’s not bothering her and she’s still living happily as normal I wonder what to do for the best. Maybe I’ll ring them in the morning and see what they say

I would do that :)

Is there anything that can be done? The vet didn’t think so, she said she could operate but its so close to her eye that it could do more harm and Izzy’s quite old so I’m not sure she’d survive being sedated. It’s really sad, the vet said that it’s just going to gradually get worse, is there really nothing I can do at all?

I have no experience of this, but if it were me, I would want to get the advice from a specialist vet. It may be that the specialist would come to the same conclusion as your vet that there is not really anything else which could be done, but I would want that confirmation. I understand the dangers of operating on an 8 year old rabbit, but that's something else that the specialist could take into account in his advice.

Sending lots of hugs to you. This must be very distressing.
