  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Gentamicin - how dangerous is it to eat?

My vet, after a chat with John Chitty, has given me gentamicin to paint on Felix's jaw abscess in addition to other meds. She added that we mustn't let him groom himself and eat it. Yeah, right! I didn't take the phone call so I didn't get a chance to talk to her myself. I am seeing her tomorrow and will ask for a Brandon collar. However it would be useful to start it sooner if Felix removes the scab over it tonight (which is quite likely). Can he poison himself with it?

It can be nephrotoxic so I would definitely not want a Rabbit to ingest it

This is what Medirabbit says:

Best avoided for use in rabbits
Depending on dosage: Ototoxicity
Nephrotoxic, neuromuscular block

Hi, yes, sorry for the delay in answering. We didn't use the gentimicin in the end as my vet was also uncertain when I questioned it. Felix is doing remarkably well for a rabbit with who had an enormous jaw abscess. The vet took the scab over the abscess opening off to reveal very clean skin underneath. We are continuing with the baytril (which it is sensitive to) and metacam long term as probably something nasty is still lurking. So far so good! Felix is fine in himself other than expressing strong views on being handled so much and made to drink baytril (yuk!).

I am glad to hear that Felix is doing well and I hope that the Baytril keeps the infection under control. It sounds as though it is doing so at the moment. Shame it tastes so rank though !

Hi there and thanks for coming back to post

I hope Felix continues to feel well and get better and that the Baytril works for him :)
