Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

French Lop eye crusties

I have a 7month old Frenchie that has eye crusty problems. I know they are common in Frenchies but wanted to see what other people do for them. Anything helps 😊

Welcome to the forum

A weepy eye often causes the crusties:

That's quite a long and involved article, but may throw some light on the condition for you?

A bacterial infection, usually in the tear duct, will also cause the crusts - which is basically dried discharge. A vet visit would be in order to flush the tear ducts and see whether that clears up the problem. It can be ongoing and need to be done more than once, but they can be managed that way.

In the meantime, I would boil some water, let it cool, and then take a cotton wool pad and gently wipe around the eye to keep it clean. Probably two/three times daily. You can also use camomile tea for this.

If you have a warm compress of cotton pad you can gently press on the tear duct under the eye to express some of the white gunk, if the crustiness isn't blocking the tear duct exit.

I hope something there helps? :)

Have you consulted a Vet about the problem yet ? There are a lot of conditions that can contribute to 'eye crusties'. With French Lops one condition to be mindful of is Entropion. Some breed lines of Frenchies are very prone to this condition.

Personally my first course of action, as with all Rabbit ailments, would be to consult a Rabbit Savvy Vet. The Vet should be able to ascertain the precise nature of your Rabbit's eye discharge and suggest the most appropriate treatment . Sometimes it may be a simple as a course of antibiotic drops to clear up a mild infection. But as I have said, ascertaining the actual cause of the problem will offer you the best treatment/management options. Good luck :)
