Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

RHD2 News re: MDS (combined myxo-RHD vaccine manufacturer) study on vaccine effects.

"I've just got back from a veterinary symposium on Konijnen and Knaagdieren (Rabbits and Rodents) in the Netherlands. It is an annual event, which is always really good. MSD Animal Health (manufacturers of Nobivac Myxo-RHD) had a stand there. They have just done a small study into the effects of vaccination on antibody levels of RHD and RHDV2. I can't find a direct link to the paper but it is in the printed proceedings. There were 24 rabbits divided into four groups of 6. One group had no vaccine, another had Nobivac Myxo-RHD on its own, the third group had Filavac on its own and the last group had both vaccines given together. No adverse health effects were seen in any rabbits. The best response to RHD was in rabbits that were given both vaccines. None of the 6 rabbits that were given Nobivac Myxo-RHD had antibodies to RHDV2 after 6 weeks, which is evidence that Nobivac Myxo-RHD does not offer any protection against RHDV2. The best immunological response to RHDV2 was in the group of rabbits that had both vaccines. The article is called 'Lack of serological interference following the concurrent use of Nobivac Myxo-RHD and Filava VHD K C+V vaccines in Rabbits'. The authors are S. Reemers, L. Peeters, J. van Schindel, S. van de Zande and D. Sutton."

So this study tells us what we already know. VHD works against VHD. VHD2 works against VHD2. Both works against both and no vaccine doesn't work at all.

Poor rabbits.

But that bit wasn't known. It's important to know that both vaccines work when given together, and they were literally given together, apparently - at the same time. I'm no fan of testing drugs on animals but this was for the sake of rabbits.

Trials need to be done in rabbits for a rabbit vaccine. It's not like they were then made to contract RHD2... they were tested for antibodies.

As you've said, we weren't aware that Nobivac and Filavac could be given together as we believed it would effect their immunological response, so it's good to know in general it's not the end of the world if both are given together.

Until a larger study is done, it's still recommended to give them 2 weeks apart to allow the immune system to cope.

Thank you for posting this info.
