  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Urgent - leaf was eaten

Thank you everyone for everything - all the links were super helpful I showed them to the vet and it really helped - she's staying at the vets overnight :( gunna have fluids and they're going to monitor her - and give her something if she gets worse. Hopefully I'll be able to collect her tomorrow afternoon :( so worried about her she kept jumping into my arms off the table in the consultation room she's such a sweetie.

I guess she's in the best place currently - wish my proper vets was open but at least she'll get help if she needs it :( just wish they knew about rabbits there xx

Poor little one - and poor you!!

I hope she will be able to come home soon :)

It was so stupid, my mum moved the plant nearer her pen and I went to feed her and she always jumps out onto my leg for strokes but she jumped out and came face to face with the plant and just bit the leaf off and I instantly went for her mouth but she'd already swallowed the bit she got :(

I know I'm too late with any further information as you will have already been to see the vet, but it's probably still quite important to try to establish what the plant is.

The plant is in a pot, but does it need protection in the house or does it live outside? Kalanchoes I think need protection. This is the picture, which I though compared well with your pic https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipe.../240px-Sedum_spurium_album_superbum_0.8_R.jpg and this is Sedum spurium and this describes its toxicity https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/all/sedum-spurium/

I'm not sure which it is if I'm honest, they look similar.

It's definitely an indoor plant though

I can see your bun is at the vets, how's she doing?

Earlier this year, my bunny Bailey got on my windowsill and nibbled part of a leaf of a succulent plant. Like you I was so annoyed with myself and called our vet straight away. They suggested I took him straight away, which I did. They checked him over and ran bloods. They gave him some fluid and then thankfully we we're given the all clear and headed home. I'm lucky in that my vets are 24/7 on call. Once home, he ate his tea, ate his hay and pooped fine! You'd never have guessed he'd eaten something he shouldn't of!

I know each case is different, but at least she's in the right place. I just wanted to let you know of my experience.

Hope she's okay xx

That's really comforting to hear thank you :)

I don't know how she's doing really I'm supposed to get a call at 11, but I'm going to call them soon to check how she is - what did bloods check for? Maybe I should ask them to do bloods, altho last time they did for another rabbit they said they basically can't tell much unless they send them off they're a bit useless there unfortunately xx

in the nicest way, I'm a huge nightmare with my vets as they are exotic specialists and due to my previous 2 passing away with issues that I believe we could have done more for, I always go over the top with everything. I think they did it more so to cover all basis to put my mind at rest. The values didn't show much at all.. So your vet is probably right and I suppose they want to try and keep her as calm as possible!

Really hope she's okay, and like I said my tinker was absolulty fine! If it helps, the succulent Bailey ate was this;

Haha don't worry I'm the same - the vets Fleur is currently at wanted to put my other girl Clementine down because she stopped being able to walk and they couldn't figure out why - they just kept saying it was the best thing and it was cruel etc etc turns out her knee caps had popped out of place, and another vet operated on her and she's absolutely fine now - runs, jumps, hops about like a normal bunny and she never ever gave up. So tbh I don't really trust them. It was a real eye opener for me, because naively I thought a vet was a vet (mainly had dogs before) and most have a load of training with dogs so was okay. But I've learnt that finding a good rabbit savvy vet is everything haha and I would prefer never to take them anywhere else, but as they're only there during the week I guess it's not always possible.

Hi, just checking in to see how your bunny is?

Hope you've had a good update? Xx
Thanks for vibes everyone :) - and thank you for checking in x

I called them a minute ago, they said she's doing well and they've been giving her fluids every hour over night and she's started to eat bits of hay and a few pellets. They want to keep her till 4 but then hopefully if nothing changes I'll be able to go get her. They said about running bloods and I asked what they would show, nurse wasn't sure, said they'd call me to discuss if they need doing etc so hopefully they do that. Been so worried about her but I'm hoping everything will be okay so she can come home.

I'm pleased to read your update. What a worrying time it's been for you :(

It sounds like the vets are looking after her well and it's encouraging that she's eating. I hope she's considered stable enough to come home later today.

Aww I'm so glad she's doing okay, bless her!

Like Omi says it's really encouraging that she's eating and hope she continues to improve.

Hopefully she can come home later and you might find she'll improve more when she's back in her familiar surroundings.

Topping up the vibes for your gorgeous girl xx

Hope all will be well with your wee one.Kalanchoe are such a common houseplant, they are small and cheap.I have two at present. One from the pound shop, still going ,getting larger.one from ASDA ,cost two quid.
