Good afternoon,

My rabbit is poorly, he started with some episodes of shaking in the nights, he had them twice. Later he had like an urine infection cause he was peeing everywhere (instead of in the tray as usual) and 5 times or 6 times. And Later he has pododermatitis (it was caused due to the bedding, I've just bought a new bedding for him)

But now the eye has something white coming out, and it is shallows below. I was in three different veterinaries, without success, the three of them are in my town and on Monday they refer me to Cambridge to an exotic vet. I went there, they make him a blood test with all the results ok and the vet propose me to operate him: flush it and see if he has something wrong with the teeth. The total cost is £842 which obviously I can't afford.

The last vet in my town called me to suggest me to give him an antibiotic to try if it heals him... We started today : SULFATRIM.

I feel frustrated, wasting my time, my money, my bunny's health...and nothing conclude...

The ear is ok apparently, and the paws are getting better with the time.

Any help for this case please.

I will appreciate it so much.

Thanks!

Hello

It sounds as though the Specialist thinks that the eye problem may be due to a blocked nasolacrimal duct (tear duct). One possible cause of this is a Dental issue relating to the tooth roots. Hence the Specialist suggested a GA/Nasolacrimal duct flush and full Dental examination, almost certainly to include skull radiographs.

Aswell as the Sulphatrim has your local Vet also prescribe a topical antibiotic eye treatment such as Isathal ?

I assume the blood tests run by the Specialist included testing for Encephalitozoon Cuniculi (EC) ? The 'shaking' symptoms you describe and the urinary tract symptoms can occur due to EC.

Is your Rabbit receiving an anti-inflammatory analgesic for the pododermatitis ?

Hi there and welcome to the forum

I'm really sorry to hear about your rabbit.

The white coming out of his eye is probably due to a blocked tear duct. This can cause some infection in the tear duct which will need clearing. This doesn't need an anaesthetic when done by a good vet. It can be done during a consultation and incurs only that fee.

http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Eye_diseases/Discharge/eye_discharge.htm

To look at the teeth for most vets would need a rabbit to be sedated. A dental shouldn't cost more than £100/150 max. I am confused as to why you've been quoted such a high fee for those two things?

I think the fact that he is shaking needs to be considered.

Has anyone mentioned E.Cuniculi? A parasite that is very common in rabbits ...

https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/rabbit-health/e-cuniculi/

http://www.kingswoodvets.co.uk/rabbit-e-cuniculi-illness/4586826046

Treatment would be a 28 day course of Panacur and also Metacam, an anti-inflammatory.
Neither of these meds are expensive.

I hope you can find somewhere to treat your rabbit and get some results.

I know you've seen a number of vets already, but if you would like to know the vets that our members have found helpful,

yes, they think the teeth are damaged, and they are thinking to remove it (maybe), but he has before this eye drop in my country one vet suggested to remove the teeth, I denied, and another vet found the solution, it was only a bacteria. I read about removing teeth and I don't agree at all...indeed at first look (without x-ray) the rabbit's teeth are ok! and he is eating hay EVERY DAY.

Aswell as the Sulphatrim has your local Vet also prescribe a topical antibiotic eye treatment such as Isathal ?
no, she only gave me the sulphatrim but last time in the same consultation (another vet) gave an ointment (which didn't work at all).

I assume the blood tests run by the Specialist included testing for Encephalitozoon Cuniculi (EC) ? The 'shaking' symptoms you describe and the urinary tract symptoms can occur due to EC.
I don't have the answer for this question, but the last consultation in my local vet he gave me the wormer for this disease if I don't understood wrong...

Is your Rabbit receiving an anti-inflammatory analgesic for the pododermatitis ?
Yes. Metacan. and the pododermatitis is getting much better, is not big at all and my vet (in my country) told me to GET RID inmediatly for the bedding, (wooden one) cause it remains wet and that's the cause of the pododermatitis. As well he is sneezing sometimes, probably because of the dust of the wooden.

You help me a lot, I will look at the links carefully and I really think you help me.

I will continue updating!

Thanks

Cause I am lost...

And even thought I am not a vet...believe me...don't think my rabbit has any tooth wrong...don't think he will continue eating like this! asking for food all the day!!!I imagine that they have pain...but...

The sulfatrim is for the eye? cause I read is for stomach problems? Treatment of gastrointestinal infections caused by protozoa (namely coccidian)

Thanks in advance.

I could send you the budget, the local vet told me today to flush (without any dental operation will be £200) the exotic vet in Cambridge is the one who send me the budget with the total cost of £842. Apart from this (the price) I don't agree to remove any teeth...he has before this eye drop some years ago and we don't need to remove any teeth (I asked a second opinion) and finally he had a bacteria!nothing to do with the teeth!

I think the fact that he is shaking needs to be considered.
Yes, my vet in my country suggested me to ask them to do an electro and revise the ear as well...

Has anyone mentioned E.Cuniculi? A parasite that is very common in rabbits ...
Yes the local vet mention it, and she gave me a wormer, metacan and the sulphatrim ,but later the eye got worse. first consultation was about the paws (pododermatitis) and I mentioned in there all ( the eye, which already drop a bit), the attacks, the paws, the urine.......believe me, he recovered very well...even though it looks he is very unhealthy...

NO, neither of them are expensive. I have Metacam, and I will check the name of the wormer...in case is the Panacur you say. thanks.

thanks a lot! I hope so, cause I am very worried, he came all way long from my country two years ago and I care a lot of him. Don't want him to suffer at all.

Yes, wood shavings are not normally recommended for rabbits' bedding and have caused issues:

http://www.rabbit.org/care/shavings.html

http://adamthevet.com/the-great-bedding-debate/

Usually for eye problems you would be given specific eye drops - e.g. Fucithalmic/ Isathal. An antibiotic such as Sulfatrim would be for another bacterial infection, possibly the urinary tract?

You are right to be wary of taking a rabbit's teeth out, it's a very serious thing to do. You seem to be looking after your rabbit well and trying to do your best. You just need a good vet to work along with you :)

For the E.cuniculi they gave me Lapizole, we finished with it.

Hi there

Perhaps the sulfatrim is for something else - ask the vet, that's why you pay them :)

The Lapizole, if it's for E.C. should be for 28 days. Did you have the tubes that last 9 days? Also, all rabbits in touch with each other should be treated at the same time, as it's passed through spores in the urine.

Certainly I will try and help you all I can :)

Sulfatrim (Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole) is an antibiotic that can be used to treat various bacterial infections aswell as protozoal gut infections

figure 2 /epiphora is exactly how my bunny's eye look like!!!!I didn't read in there at all to remove the teeth!!just a deep flush!

Exactly! :)

As I mentioned, removing teeth is a serious business and it sounded like your bunny needed it's tear ducts flushing.

I hope you can get this sorted out as I would hate to think of you having to pay for things that aren't necessary :)

In the links states that if the rabbit has a problem in the teeth will stop eating!he is desperate to eat all the time!!

I am checking now...a vet in Norfolk...

thanks!

I will be there with my homework done next week..I will print this info..and highlight what I want them to do!!!and the medicines to give him!!cause now I don't understand why they gave him sulfatrim!

I don't have afortunately any other rabbit hehe, oki I will ask her...but I am waiting a bit and see if he improves...

The closest vet is 1h far driving. same as Cambridge or Norwich. I am printing all the info for them...
