  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spurs or something else?

yes, shop is very busy & after a horrible lull am getting Camp Nibble mentions (ok I've bullied the odd customer in to it) .

Thank you JJ -

Katty - thank you! You never know, she is a brave little fighter anyway

Well it didn't take Boo long to work out her mummy with 2 syringes hanging out of her mouth means nasty baytril time. She is a swine to catch (normally super easy to catch but thats just for eviction from certain bits of the house) & is not taking her medine nicely at all. Its annoying cos I almost feel she doesn't need it. The baytril is a precautionary thing in case food gets caught in her 2 cavities. But it hadn't got infected for however long they have been there. She was & remains full of beans & continues to trough everything availiable. Pre op & post op she ate hay & nuggets. I'm begining to think she doesn't feel pain which is a scary thought for a kamikaze deaf bunny. Does she need Metacam. I'm not JUST trying to get out of medicating her, honest

How long is the course of Baytril for?

Annoyingly I don't know. When it runs out . It doesn't say how much is in the bottle & instructions give start but not end date. I shall call vet on tuesday

That's rather interesting .. as is the vet not being to estimate when the teeth *may* have fallen out, given the sockets weren't entirely healed.

But what do I know?

all thoughts / ideas welcome but I was referring to the 2 things you mentioned - baytril & vet not knowing how long sockets would take to heal

I think it would be good to discuss a few things with the vet when you call, now that you have had time to think things through and the vet hopefully has been able to discuss Boo's x-rays with a specialist.

If it were me, and I realise that this is not a common issue for vets, I would want to know their thoughts about the sockets and in particular the status of their healing. My understanding of human sockets after a tooth extraction is that they appear to heal quite speedily, but that the filling up of the sockets with bone takes longer and is a much slower process. I think the early healing is sufficient to avoid the food/infection concern. So, it would appear to me, not from knowledge but just thinking this through, that *if* the sockets appeared unhealed to the vet then (a) the loss of the teeth was quite recent and (b) I'm not sure that with resorption (as in the JJ linked article) the sockets would appear unhealed as resorption would suggest to me a slower and gentler process.

I think if Boo is eating well and not showing any signs of pain it would be OK to leave off the Metacam IF it's been given for pain relief. However, it might have been prescribed for inflammation. I would imagine though that it's the Baytril that Boo is running away from and so I think you wouldn't gain much.

Thanks Omi. It would be really useful to have timescales wouldn't it - some idea of how long it took her bottom tooth to grow to problematic levels. I'm pretty sure she thought Boos gums were healthy. She had her metacam on her paws today. I'd actually rather inject her than give oral meds & I hate injecting. I'm going to read that article now that Jane linked

I have a rabbit with problem teeth, and my vet has estimated how much it will grow in what time frame.

Hopefully your vet can help you?

Interestingly enough (I think) my Noodle had a tooth removed by FHB & that didn't heal & I remember she said it was a very unusual thing to see in rabbits but quite common in daschunds - I'd kinda forgotten that. I wonder if her surgery would let me access her records 15 years on. Started on the article & it looks really good & informative - I need to concentrate though so need to get on with stuff (chatting on RU, avoiding chores & work) & set time aside. I'm not very good at reading

I'll PM you so as not to derail your thread

If its relevant to dental buns it can't derail the thread surely. I learnt loads from trawling & reading here years before I joined. And I know people are reading cos last night views were at 1066

Baytril success - mushed a homemade treat (contains lots of fenugreek) with Baytril & she gobbled it all up

Good :thumb: Fenugreek seems to be a flavour that most of them find hard to resist. What did you decide about the Metacam?
