  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Metacam question

Is it safe to use metacam that expired in February?
Cookie is having a tummy time and don't have any other pain relief.

I know it's really not ideal, but I have done in the past and my two have been fine.

Hope cookie has improved since last night? Xx

I've often used out of date Metacam with no ill effects. But you must make your own decision - if you have an issue, I would go to the vet.

Personally I wouldn't use *in* date oral metacam in a bunny with a tummy that is not working properly, without consulting a vet first. NSAIDs like meloxicam give a higher risk of things like stomach ulcers (something that FHB is concerned about with the higher doses used more commonly these days), so if you're giving NSAIDs to a rabbit thats guts have slowed down or stopped, you're increasing the risk of gastric ulcer. It's a really tricky situation especially if you can't get to the vets, but I would always want injected meds to try and kick start a bun that has a sore tummy.

Hope it's just a little blip and that Cookie perks right up soon x

I hope that Cookie is feeling much better by now Rach ?
