  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Walking dandruff mites

Young Bun
Hi, I'm pretty sure my buns have mites (the walking dandruff ones) they both have dandruff and one of them has a little bald patch on the back of her neck. What is the best treatment to get for this, and would I be able to get it online? I really cant afford to go to a vet at the moment

Yes it does look like mites Sophie :D

The normal treatment for mites is ivermectin:

http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Skin_diseases/Parasitic/furmite/fur_mite.htm

https://www.viovet.co.uk/Pharmaq_Ivermectin_Spot-On_Drops/c19097/

It's usually a spot on treatment, for all rabbits at the same time, and then it's repeated two weeks later. Some vets also repeat the dose a further two weeks after that to interrupt the life cycle of the mite.

Would i have to seperate them after applying it so they dont lick it off whole grooming each other?

You could distract them somehow - maybe with herbs or treats, for about 15 minutes until it dries? Otherwise probably a good idea to separate, but maybe only if you see them licking it off one another. They may not :)

Thanks, I'll try distracting them :)
