Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Acid reflux and mouth ulcers

Hi guys! I really need some advices to help my bunny. Last month my dear Nina have stopped eating and pooping. So, I took her to the vet. In the exams, they found a strange body (~2cm) in her gut. In the first 3 weeks I gave medicines and forced feeding. Nina expelled the strange body (it was a mixture of mucus and poop) in the 4th week of treatment. I was so happy that she's finally be fine, but she didn't. She started drooling and grinding her teeth. Before that I took her to vet (for the Xth time) and he diagnosed ulcers in her mouth due acid reflux. So, I've been giving medicines (ranitidine and cimetidine) and forcing feeding for 19 days since the last problem was solved. She was getting better until yesterday, when the acid reflux started over again. Now I can't force feeding because she's having troubles to swallowing.

Has anyone ever had similar bunnies problems with acid reflux and mouth ulcers? Why is she taking so long to getting better? Why she have had another reflux crisis if she was taking the medicines? I really don't know what to do! I don't want my baby to suffer anymore... It's been more than 1 month since she's sick. Thanks in advance.

ps: English is not my first language. Feel free to correct me.

I am sorry that this post was overlooked.

Has the Vet run any diagnostic tests to try to ascertain a primary cause of the 'acid reflux' ?

Diagnostics may include a full blood profile, an endoscopic examination of Nina's oesophagus/stomach ,abdominal radiographs ?

Another member of RU, username 'cpayne' has a Rabbit (called 'Doughnut') who has chronic reflux disease which was initially badly misdiagnosed by more than one Vet. Eventually cpayne was able to locate an Exotics Specialist Vet who ran appropriate diagnostics to establish what was going on. So you could drop cpayne a PM

But of course Nina may have a different problem causing her symptoms so I would advise you to try to locate an Exotics Specialist Vet to consult. I am assuming that you are not in the UK ?

Again, sincere apologies for the fact that your thread was missed when you posted it.

Hi there and welcome to the Forum

How is your bunny now?

Yes I can see the dilemma in that she is having more acid reflux even though she is on the gut medicines to prevent it! Yes I have had this issue with a rabbit, and I eventually found a way to solve it, as ranitidine - although good- didn't quite hit the spot.

however, in your case I would perhaps seek a second opinion from a good rabbit savvy vet. If your vet can't answer these questions for you, then perhaps a specialist can?

Please update us with your rabbit's recent progress, and thank you Minilop for highlighting this post :)
