  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Emergency: Cat attacked my rabbit

My rabbit is bleeding from his foot because my dad let him out earlier and was not bothered to put him back in.
Long story short my 7 month old lion head x rabbit is bleeding from his foot (Not severe anymore)

This is totally my fault but it looks like the bleeding will stop any advice?

Take him to a vet right now. Cat bites and scratches are often infected so the bleeding isn't your main problem, though he might need stitches if it's was as bad as you suggest.

If he has sustained a bite from a Cat then he does need to be seen by a Vet. As HB says, cat bites can become very nasty very quickly, the bite may not look to be more than a tiny hole in the skin. But the bacteria on the cat's teeth will have gone deep into the foot and an abscess would be almost inevitable. The wound certainly needs flushing out with a sterile saline solution or dilute antiseptic solution and a course of systemic antibiotics are also likely to be necessary.

The sooner you consult a Vet the better in order to minimise the risk of more serious problems developing. Good luck x

Hi there and welcome to the Forum

As Happybun says, a vet's visit is what's needed.

A vet may judge that antibiotics are needed to prevent infection. I know vet's visits can be expensive, but think how much worse it might be if the wound became infected, or developed an abscess.

Much better to head it off sooner rather than later.

Good luck xx
