Daily Allowance of Fresh Fruit and Vegetables

albisure

New Kit
Hi,

Can anyone recommend what the daily amount of fresh food, i.e veg, herbs, fruit excluding hay should be?

I'm trying to work out a daily fresh food plan for a whole week.

Cheers. Albi

you can be quite generous with leafy greens & herbs, fruit should be fed sparingly, in small quantities (if at all). You'll find everyone is different. Mine get equivalent to a stuffed carrier bag of forage daily between three. Grass is good & lots of rabbits will find it more interesting than hay.

They say 80% minimum hay (+/or grass) & 20% maximum on veg & nuggets

Thanks for your help.

So, that would be ruffly a day, per rabbit?
I'd like to work out the correct amount each day to avoid overeating, wastage and better understand the proper eating habits

Thanks again joey&boo, for your help.

At the vets we worked out 80% hay, 15% fresh veg & forage, 5% pellets.

So unlimited hay, around a handful or two of veg (keep fruit as a treat once a week), then around 15g to 20g of pellets.

This is per rabbit, per day.

Generally they'll eat everything you offer unless they're I'll or don't like the taste. The main thing is ensuring they eat enough hay.

Hi there and welcome to the Forum

There's some info in these links that might be useful to read, when you've time.
I forage a lot for my rabbits, and I find that's the best for their digestive system and it's also free!

Good luck :)

I think it's hard to recommend a specific amount because it depends on the size of your rabbit, what veg you're giving them, if they're good hay eaters or have sensitive stomachs etc. My two boys get two/three handfuls of leafy veg each day (to share, not each) and sometimes a little bit of carrot/fruit as a treat. Luckily I've never seen any soft poos/caecotrophs so i think their stomachs are pretty hardy but if I do give them too much veg it fills them up and they don't eat as much hay (which they really need to keep their teeth worn down)
