  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit abscess on head

chararch

New Kit
My rabbit was attacked by another rabbit a year and a half ago, the other rabbit bit into her head, through her nerves so unfortunately the vets had to amputate her ear. We can now feel a lump in the area where her ear was about the size of a grape, the vets thinks she could have bumped it and looks like it could be an abscess. She is acting normally and it dosn't seem to be bothering her. The vet told us just to measure the size of it in the next few months to see if it gets bigger. Will she just need surgary anyway?

Thank you :)

Hello

Personally I would not be happy to just monitor things for a few months. If it is an ear base abscess then prompt treatment is essential. This may include surgery. There is some information about ear base abscesses here, there are some graphic images on the links :

Can you seek a second opinion from a different Vet ?

Hi there and welcome to the Forum

I'm sorry to hear about your rabbit. Abscesses are something that often don't particularly bother a rabbit, in my experience (and sadly that's dozens of them :()

Surgery - possibly, but it could also be a 'lance and drain' job and then a course (usually lengthy) of injectable penicillin. It has to be injectable or it's fatal, but it's fine when injected.

Here's some info I posted recently, in case some of it's any use to you. Some it concerns dental abscesses, but the procedure is the same for an abscess in rabbits, as they tend to encapsulate themselves and become difficult to deal with:

Thanks for your reply. I will take a look at these :) The vet said surgery is the only option so not sure why we have to monitor it if nothing else can be done.
