Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Scabs near eye and mouth UD Back from the vets

My little rabbit appeared with a small scab above her eye, originally just appeared a tad red then progressed, she then developed a very similar scab above her lip.

Took her straight to the vets and the vet didn't have a clue what it could be, told me to leave her and if it gets worse contact a vets with a rabbit specialist!

Just wondering if anyone has dealt with something similar or know what it could be

She did stay at my boyfriends mums last week so originally I though it was an allergy but she's now home and just seems to be getting worse

ETA: she had her vaccinations last week also so I was wondering if it could be linked

Had she already been vaccinated and these were boosters?
I'm afraid your vet doesn't sound at all competent or confident with rabbits and yes, I would advise you to find a rabbit-savvy vet as soon as possible. If you start a thread - Rabbit-savvy vet needed in ................. someone may be able to recommend one for you.

Hi there

Having a vaccination is a challenge to the immune system, and sometimes things 'come out' at times like this. Often mites, when a rabbit gets low immune response.

Have a look at these links and see if anything rings true:

Rabbit syphilis - also called Treponematosis - is easily treated:

Administration of the narrow spectrum antibiotic penicillin G (benzathine/procaine: 42.000 - 84.000 UI/kg, SC, IM), 4-6 repeats at intervals of 5 to 7 days, is the treatment of choice against rabbit syphilis. (Rabbits should NEVER be administered penicillin orally; it can lead to severe diarrhea).

thank you, I'm going to contact battle flatts as I just remembered they have a rabbit specialist, it a while from me but I just want to get her seen by someone who knows what they're doing

I would be interested to know whether the vet thinks it's rabbit syphilis.

Hope the links are useful :)

It could be a reaction to the Vaccination

'' In very rare cases the appearance of mild clinical signs of myxomatosis may occur within 3 weeks of vaccination. Recent or latent infection with field myxoma virus seems to play a role in this to a certain extent.''

I'll keep you updated, I think whatever it is I've caught it quite early as the scabs are rather small and have just gone from looking like irritated red skin to being a tad crusty!

Fingers crossed for my little one, I took her in with a broken front leg after someone dumped her, she's a little fighter

You're definitely on the ball :D

Booked to see Mark the rabbit specialist at Battle Flatts Friday morning, so hopefully we can find out what it is!
Tallulah is non the wiser and currently sat aggressively chewing a shoe box that I've used to block her from getting down the side of my desk

Just got back from the vets, Mark said at this stage its too early to say for definite what it could be but there are 3 options:

1. they could be caused by her vacc, or he said he's seen similar lumps appear on vaccinated rabbits that have come into contact with myxi and in stead of getting full blown myxi they get these lumps. If this is the case they should disappear over the next 6 weeks

2. It could be a bacterial infection, likely due to her immune system being slightly suppressed by having the vacc

3. It could be very early stages of syphilis but as the scab near her mouth is on the skin and not on the mucosal junction, Mark will only give her penicillin if she develops more scabs/ gets any around her vulva

He's sent me away with a weeks worth of the antibiotic septrin, said as this stage he doesn't want to do a biopsy as she's such a tiny bunny and it's so early

So I'm rather happy that we finally have some idea of what it is and she's under treatment, going to see the vets again in a week for a check up and to see if we need to continue with the septrin or if any other action needs to be taken

Tallulah quite enjoyed her trip to the vets (she's a weird rabbit and likes going in her carrier ) and she's very happy that her meds taste like banana, she nearly grabbed the syringe off of me!

Glad that you feel reassured after seeing the Vet and I hope that Tallulah's 'nana flavoured meds clear up any infection quickly x

Haha - what a good result!

I'm glad she likes the banana flavoured meds. I have a bun taking that at the moment (though a lot longer course ) and my rabbit absolutely detests it!!

Glad you saw a good vet who gave Tallulah a thorough exam :)
