Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Well here I am again, I was stroking Norah (it's always Norah) and I felt something stuck to her. When I tried to pull it off I realised it was stuck into her skin. I thought maybe it was a tick , I have had animals all my life but never had a tick on any of them and Norah hasn't been anywhere to get a tick so I can only presume it was from when she was dumped in the country or can they get them from the hay, if it had of been Jimmy I would of understood as he is into everything.. I am going to vets AGAIN in half a hour. (They love me). Has anyone had experience with ticks.

Good luck at the vets, let me know how you both get on.

Ticks are quite rare in this country but not impossible:

Hope it's not that

The 'something' is not located in the place where Norah would have had an injection/vaccination is it ?

No it is strangely at the top of her back leg, it's prob just a skin tag, that is what it looks like although it's quite stuck inside,it is best to get it looked at otherwise I worry myself silly

I wondered whether it could be fur mites. It can look pretty similar in some cases, the way it affects the fur :)

Or perhaps a flea? Less common though:

Well I am back. The vet actually admitted she didn't have a clue what it was, she thinks she might of had a domestic with Jimmy. I have to watch it incase it turns into an abscess, she did say her eye hadn't really improved and she might need regular flushes.so this brings me onto my next question. I have just joined petplan yesterday for both rabbit's I am aware that I can't claim for any illnesses that they have had before the policy starts. Which is a big massive bummer. Could I not just register them at a different vets, which I was planning on doing anyway and pretend the eye is a new illness. I know that's naughty but just wondered, I don't really rate the vets I use for the rabbits at the minute as they are not really rabbit specialists, they are good with my dog though. I have been recommended a fab vet not much further away.. I have had so much bad luck with Norah it is unreal..

I have to say it ran through my mind, as it sounds just like a 'nick' from a domestic. I didn't like to cast aspersions on Jimmy though!

With pet insurance, they ask you to state all the vets you've visited in the past, so it's going to be hard to get out of that one I'm afraid.

Going to a better vet will always be a good thing though.

I have only seen Jimmy pounce on Norah once and that was when she pinched his half of the oaticake we buy off a lovely lady on facebook. Do you know anything about eye flushes, do they have to be sedated. She had a flush done the day I found her, and I'm sure they just took her round the back to do it, can't say it made much difference though as her eye was still bad when I picked her up from the shelter.

No they don't have to be sedated, and I can carry out the procedure myself at home. However, some vets prefer to sedate a rabbit.

Are you applying a compress of a cotton pad with warm boiled water in the meantime? That helps to get the gunk to come out of the tear duct.

That looks pretty straight forward although I would be scared in case she jumped and I poked her eye out.[emoji33] I wish I lived next door to you, you would be very handy to have around[emoji16] I will buy the cotton pads and do the bathing. How often should I do that, she let's me do more or less anything to her. She is so docile.I have a feeling she was dumped because she was so good for showing anymore with all her issues.

Thank you :D

I would try and do it twice a day.

I always use a piece of cotton wool soaked in warm boiled water. The tear duct's exit is at the inner conner of the rabbit's eye. If you apply a warm and gentle compress under the eye, towards the inner corner (not on the eye itself) you may help to release some of the gunk that is trapped within the tear duct.

If there are crusts, you may have to loosen them gently with a cotton ball soaked in the cooled boiled water. Alternatively her rabbit friend would clean up the eye for free :)

Last night I went back to see a different vet because that thing on Norah's side was bothering me and I done the wrong thing by googling it. When I went into the vets and said I was scared she had warbles from a bot fly he laughed at me. He said if she had that he would have to report it as we don't have them in this country. (You see I am a worrier) He did say it looked like a bee sting , he pulled the bit off that was hanging off and put some antiseptic on it and he promised me she will be fine. Also ,the vets I went to on Monday charged £28.00 to tell me they didnt know what it was and the vet i seen yesterday charged me £15.00 and totally put my mind at ease.so I know we're I am going from now on. [emoji16]

That's really good to know glitterdust :)

You need to find a vet you can trust, and who will be reasonable about fees and charges.

Hope Norah's wotsit clears up soon :)

How are you managing with the eye stuff GD? :)

Fine , I am bathing her eye Like you said once in the morning before I go to work and once at night before bed and it seems to be keeping it under control. It's not as gunky. I was making the mistake before of bathing the whole eye.. [emoji3].

Glad it's under control for now :) It's a bit of an art to get to the tear duct under the eye and massage gently. It can be really helpful.

Is the eye pretty much pink and not red? (The tissues within the eyelids?)

There is no redness and only some days it is pink, some days are worse than others it runs more than anything that is what seems to be the main problem.

So long as the fur around the eye isn't deteriorating, it should be OK to keep it under control :)

Weepy eyes are so common in rabbits! x

Thank you, I will keep doing what I am doing and any deterioration I wil l take her to the vet, as you know vet visits are my most favourite past time. [emoji3].
