Re-bonding after surgery U/D Going well, what now?

Since Ernie had to have surgery to have his eye removed a couple of weeks ago, my boys have been separated, on the vets orders. We split their shed in half with mesh panels so they can still see/hear/sniff/touch each other.

The vet wanted us to wait until this week before starting the re-bonding and we're looking to start either tomorrow or Wednesday. The boys are both really sweet and have always been super close so I'm tentively hopefully that this will go well but part of me is also terrified!

I honestly don't have a clue how to even begin with it though. Our vet suggested putting them together in a neutral space for a couple of hours, gradually increasing the time day by day if it goes well. Is this how it would normally be done? Do you have to put them in the neutral space at exactly the same time so neither gets the upper hand with territory?

As far as neutral space goes, we are thinking of using their new aviary. It is all brand new as we even removed the old paving slabs and put new ones down so the area won't smell like either of them. We won't furnish the aviary yet either so it will be empty (is that even right for rabbits? I've only ever bonded rats!).

Grateful for any advice!

Using the new aviary will be great. Have two of everything, like two litter trays, two water bowls etc.
If they've been living side by side, I imagine the bonding will go well.
So long as there is no physical injury, I'd keep them together.

Lisa, have you seen these articles? I put together a list of the most useful stuff I could find. Some of it's contradictory, and it won't suit everyone, but there might be useful snippets in there:

The re-bonding was delayed a couple of days but this morning we got the mesh around the bottom half of the aviary so decided that was good enough for bonding since either myself or OH would be in there with them at all times.

As suggested, I put two litter trays in there (both brand new so no smells) and two water bowls. The rest of the aviary was empty.

We had the boys in separate carriers and let them out at the same time. They both made a bee-line for the same litterbox.

And, within 10 minutes, we had this:

So now I'm confused! I expected problems, at least some chasing, but they've just cuddled up and gone to sleep!!

What do I do now? Should I scrub out their shed and put them back in there together (maybe with the new litter trays instead of the old ones)? Do I keep them separated in the shed for a few more days? They literally look like they've never been apart . . .

If they look like they've never been apart, if it was me I think I would scrub out the shed, neutralise with vinegar/water and let them into it together with the new litter trays. It looks like their bond is very much intact:love:

We did this last night and they are happily back in their shed together. I'm lucky to have such sweet, easy-going boys!
