Hello!!

NixNax

Young Bun
Hi, I've got a new bunny named Trixie. She is 4 months old and is very mischievous some days and very laid back others! She is a house rabbit and so far i've managed to litter train her so she has free roam in our lounge when i'm around but gradually want to increase that so at some point she's free roaming day and night and when i'm not around to keep an eye on her- not sure how long that will take though. If anyone has any advice that would be great. I'm after a rabbit savvy vet in Hertfordshire so if anyone knows any that would be great!

HI there and welcome

I have posted your request for a vet onto Rabbit Chat, where it will be seen by more people.

I would recommend Medivet Watford:

https://www.medivet.co.uk/watford

I'd recommend Nine Lives in Redbourn. But of a trip (20 to 30 mins down the M1) but they're amazing and incredibly affordable. They've got their exotics & specialist certificates.
The owner has the practice for her love of animals so it's all really cheap and affordable as she's not in it for profit (she makes enough to cover wages & living).

(No offence to Medivet but they don't).

Thank you for the new link on chat, and thank you for the recommendations- I think I've heard about the redbourne one before. I registered with one vet but after going home I decided not to go with them. I then registered with another vet to get her vaccinations but I obviously want to make sure she's registered with a good vet locally.

You're welcome :)

Hope you can find a vet you trust x

I think it depends on the vet you get. I have seen two specialists there, and I can trust them to save my rabbits' lives. And they are 24 hours, so no moving around from practice to practice if the going gets tough :)

Guy and Candice? Last I checked they didn't actually have their certificates in exotic medicine and surgery? Although they do have a keen interest. (I guess I'm partly put off from previously working with them).

When I lived in the area I did use them as my out of hours service, but I generally always went to Nine Lives. Just a preference as they do have their certificates.

Nothing wrong with trying out vets in the area.
When I lived in Watford I used 4 different vets, until I settled with Nine Lives. I'm my new area I've used 6 different vets until settling on my current (who I never intend to leave).

Thank you. I think i looked on the rwaf website but nothing came up for Hertfordshire. My rabbit needs spaying soon and i want to make sure she's in the best hands. Just out of interest, is anyone with 2 vets, i'm wondering if i should stick with the one 5 mins from me for things like nail clipping but travel further to a decent vet for more important things. The vet my rabbits with at the moment has 2 vets that operate but only 1 that seems more interested in rabbits. 1 of them gave my rabbit mite treatment which she had a huge reaction to and my rabbit choked which she said she had never heard of so im hesitant now having her spayed there. Ive been told a nurse has gone on the latest rabbit courses so know the latest info but im not sure thats enough. I just want her spayed and feel she will be in good hands. The vets had very good reviews which is why i originally chose them.

I would recommend Medivet in Watford too. Not sure whereabouts in Hertfordshire you are?

Im in welwyn garden city. Watford isnt far but always takes so long to get there. Redbourn isn't too far either, I'm going to drive there next week and see how long it takes, it says less than half an hour but I'll see. Good to know there's a good vet in watford too incase i did need to use it.

Specialist "exotic" vets or not, the staff at Medivet Watford have saved a number of my rabbits lives on several occasions over the years. They are open and have at least one vet in attendance 24/7, as well as nurses, so you never have to worry about turning up at 2am with a bun in stasis - they will admit the bun there and then if necessary, give fluids and meds, and syringe feed through the night. Also, being part of the Medivet group, they have access to a wide range of state of the art equipment which you would not ordinarily have at a small local vet, for example one of mine was taken for CT scans when a jaw abscess recurred. And being open 24/7 they really don't care if you phone at 11pm, or 5am, to check how bun is :)

Hi there Wendy-Jane

I would agree with you - Medivet Watford have also saved my rabbits' lives too.

As you say, as well as being open 24/7, they do have the equipment and expertise. CT scanning is one of those. I was actually referred there on one occasion by my vet, who is lovely, but we needed the facilities that she didn't have available :)
