  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Best way to remove hardened poo?

Charlie has always had problems with incontinence and losing weight. We have that temporarily under control however he has now accumulated some dried cecals in his tail right near his bits. How can I get this off in the safest way? I just got quoted 42.00 at vets and honestly don't have that at the moment. Also I can't leave the house due to a stomach flu and being 32 weeks pregnant told to rest. Talk about timing.... All I can think is to ease it off with a gloved hand but I'm scared of hurting him

You could sit his bum in warm water to soften the poo and it will break up as you gently tease it away. It can be a very laborious and messy task though and it sounds as though you'd be better to wait til there is someone to help you to do it. I doubt it'd help your queasy tummy to have to be the one doing it, so could your OH oblige whilst you hold Charlie ? It'd be good practice for OH in preparation for nappy changing baby !

I hope that you feel better soon x

That's how we used to deal with Louie's poopy bum too.

You can try and cut some of it away - just cut the fur between the matted poo and the skin very carefully.

I would then try sitting Charlie in a butt bath of around half inch of warm water. I then (by feel) gently tease the poo away but by bit. I find it takes around a minute or two, or less if there's not too much and it's not been there that long!

You then have to gently blow dry, as bunnies' fur is like a sponge and doesn't dry very easily. it can retain water for over 24 hours

Then lastly, I would cut the fur short around that area and it will be much easier in future :)

I'm glad you've got his incontinence under control! Do you know what caused that?

It's ongoing but he's just having a really good patch at the moment so I'm really pleased.
