Default Best sand for a digging box?

I'm thinking of building a digging box in our new aviary but I've seen so many conflicting comments about what soil/sand to use.

I'm not terribly keen on the idea of the childrens play sand so was wondering if organic topsoil might be okay to use, something like this: https://www.creativegardenideas.co.u...top-soil-20ltr

    What does everyone else use?

I use chinchilla sand as a base and then compost on top - it's nice and easy to replenish, just a new bag of compost!

I prefer soil - I think it tunnels better than sand - top soil is fine or just dig some up from your garden

I use playsand. You can make your own "chinchilla sand" by baking the play sand in the oven.

I've used topsoil too. Just make sure there is no added weed killer to it.

Play sand or topsoil here. I often wonder whether the sand gets in their eyes and irritates, even though it's mean for kids anyway. Especially the bun behind who gets flicked all over
