Loss of appetite, is it the spurs?

I'm so sorry to hear this and feel for you so much. My first bun when he was sick, and it was the first time any of my buns was sick I trusted my vet too as we do put our faith in them. Unfortunately he passed away too and I felt the way you did. Please try not to blame yourself, you were only trying to do your best and your wee bunny knew that., I know how awful you must feel loosing your poor sweet baby. I found an amazing rabbit savy vet for my other buns after this. Check out the list of vets on the Francis Harcourt Brown website so you will have a vet you can trust for your other buns. I'm so sorry for you and your bunny and can tell she was loved so much. She was beautiful. All your buns are beautiful.

I just found and read you thread. My heart is breaking for you. Your post about Jasper shows how much you loved her. I totally understand how you feel about her and Jared and Jensen being your family. I felt the same about my bunny. She was our child. You can post about her on this forum and how you are doing anything day or night and lots of people here will get it. It really hurts and it is normal to feel guilt. I think that Jasper knows how much she was loved and nothing was your fault. You did your very best for her.

Thank you everyone for your messages, I think it will take a long time for the pain to go away but helps to know that there are people who understand how much it hurts.

I am looking for a different vet to take my boys to, hoping to find a practice that has more knowledge and experience with rabbits.

Jasper really was a beautiful bunny.

I am so sorry for your loss. As Jane has said, she was so incredibly beautiful and Jane's picture skills have somehow managed to bring out her beauty even more.

It's obvious you feel the vet didn't take reasonable care before carrying out surgery so I also suggest when it doesn't hurt quite so much that you consider having the RCVS investigate.

Thank you so much Jack's-Jane, that is beautiful.

All the advice comments and condolences are very much appreciated.

Thank you to everyone.

She was a beautiful rabbit, and you must miss her terribly.

My thoughts are with you xx

I am feeling really worried, one of my boys, Jared, seems a little bit 'off' today. He doesn't appear to be eating with as much gusto as normal and his tummy looks to be bloated. I am still feeling the effects of losing my Jasper and I am finding it hard to get myself together enough to assess the situation properly.

A family member has suggested that losing Jasper has just made me feel more worried about my other two and I am being overly anxious about everything, also that he may just be missing Jasper so is feeling a little sad himself.

I am feeling so emotional and stressed, I haven't been sleeping and I am really finding it hard to know what to do. To me his tummy seems bigger and rounder than usual, squishy but firm at the same time, almost like a balloon. I am concerned about bloat vs gas and how to tell the difference. I think I have really lost confidence in my abilities to take care of them, I am feeling so lost in worry right now. I would usually take him to the vet but I have also lost confidence in them and the thought of going there so soon after being there with Jasper is filling me with dread.

I'm just so confused about everything.

I'm sorry that Jared is now causing concern. It is certainly possible that he is feeling depressed at the loss of Jasper. He could also be picking up on your anxiety. On the other hand he could be feeling poorly.

I can understand your reluctance to return to your normal vet. If you post in Rabbit Chat asking for recommendations for a good rabbit vet in the area where you live, then members can give their recommendations. I would do that as soon as you can so that, if you need to visit a vet urgently, you will know where to go. It will also make you feel less anxious if you know you have a good vet to use in the future.

Regarding Jared, I think I would monitor him very carefully, paying attention to whether his output is of normal quantity and quality as well as his food intake. If his eating and/or output deteriorates, I think he should be examined by a vet.

Sending him lots of vibes.

I'm sorry to hear about Jared. It's really hard to try and carry on as normal when you're wading through grief yourself. In your shoes I would find another vet.

I would start another thread on the Forum, in Rabbit Chat, and you could put this in the title:

Rabbit Savvy Vet needed in (your location) ... and members will give you their recommendations

Alternatively you can search here for a recommended vet:

https://www.harcourt-brown.co.uk/vetfinder/vets-owners-recommendations

And the RWAF have their own suggestions for finding a good vet:

http://www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk

I can quite understand you not wanting to go back to your vet. Perhaps you can find a vet tomorrow morning, if you feel he can wait that long. If you're not sure, then please don't wait, as it's better to be safe than sorry.

Here's some info on stasis, there might be something you feel you can do right now to help. I give Infacol, an infant gas meds, straight away as sometimes it's enough to relieve the pain of gas built up:

Even if Jared is missing Jasper, or picking up on your stress, his symptoms are real and need addressing. You need a vet to take his blood glucose and also his temperature. That will give a good idea of what's going on. Also to dispense some gut motility meds and pain relief.

Thinking of you x

Thank you for your advice MightyMax and for rallying condolences for Jasper, I really appreciate it.

I am trying to find a more experienced vet and have taken a look at those websites, fingers crossed I can find one as soon as possible.

If I feel that he can't wait I will have to take him to his usual vet, even though I am concerned that they aren't able to deal with emergency care, there is no way I could just leave him. Regarding what you suggest the vet needs to do, how do I go about requesting that they actually carry those out? In past experience they seem to disregard my suggestions and I am not sure how I can ensure they follow my wishes.

I would consider the 60 mile trip to Thurlby if it would ensure the very best care for them, but I would worry about how rabbits would cope with such a long journey.

To everyone that has responded to me over the past few days, I am sorry to be bothersome, I really do appreciate you taking the time to reply and offer advice and help for my rabbits.
Thanks again.

I'm so sorry Jared is poorly, especially when you are still grieving for poor Jasper. My rabbit savy vet is 90 mins drive away and though my buns weren't keen on the trip they were always fine afterwards The risk of going to a non rabbit savy vet is more than the risk of a 60 min vet journey to a good vet. If in doubt go to the rabbit savy vet. That's just my opinion. Sending vibes to you and Jared x

You are very welcome x

Concerning asking vets to respect your wishes, when you have suggestions, I would ask politely but firmly and say the you want those tests done. To be honest, a good vet will probably do them anyway, and a good vet will never disregard your suggestions. If they feel anything is inappropriate they will calmly and respectfully put their point of view across. Remember that the rabbit is yours and you are paying them for a service. It's important that as well as their expertise on the case, they take into account everything you say and use it to make their diagnosis and further treatment.

I wholeheartedly agree with Nicky about journeys to vets. I have a specialist who can carry out procedures that my more local vet cannot do, so I have to travel 2 and half hours each way. A bunny having a companion will travel much better than a solo one. Some rabbits don't mind the travelling too much whilst others feel stressed. Its an unavoidable evil and one you have to weigh up what to do, with the vets you have around you.

And lastly, please don't ever say you are bothersome. You are not :)

You have serious concerns and love for your rabbits. That's what brought you here, and if we can help you in any way, then it's the least we can do.

Wishing you a peaceful night and hopefully your little one will begin to feel a bit better.
