Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Rabbit Eye Removal

Hi guys,

I feel this is always where I end up for the best advice when something is wrong with one of my bunnies 😂🙈

So my bunny sasquatch has been confirmed to have glaucoma today in his right eye- he's been on the drops anyway for over a week and its looking worse rather than better. The vet is calling me monday for a quote for eye removal just wondering if anyone can shed any light on the following?

How much will it cost? (He will be having it no matter how much it costs but just want to be prepared)
Do bunnies cope okay with one eye?
Should I keep him apart from his partner after the surgery while he heals?
What is the likelihood of him getting it in the other eye and if he does would it be humane to have a totally blind bunny?

Sasquatch is an indoor bunny with free roam of upstairs so I will be able to keep a close eye on him.

Thanks in advance!

Lauren

Hi there Lauren and welcome

All vets have different scales of fees regarding this operation.

You will find some helpful info on this thread:

My bun had glaucoma and was on eye drops to reduce the pressure. He was seen regularly by a specialist eye vet to measure the pressure. Did your vet measure your buns eye pressure?? Do you know what the reading was? ? It could take longer than a week to bring the pressure down. What drops is your bun on ?? I would just be worried about rushung into eye removal before giving the drops a chance to work. But yes a wee bun can cope fine with one eye if that's what has to be done.

I know you've found my thread that MightyMax linked above but I'll still answer your questions here too. :)

My actual surgery cost was £600.

I was worried too but only 2 days after surgery my Ernie is doing absolutely fine. :)

Should I keep him apart from his partner after the surgery while he heals?
My vet was very definite about wanting my two being kept separate while Ernie recovers. She said it should be fine for them to go back together after 10 days.

I don't know much about glaucoma but I asked the blindness question too and it seems to be quite positive for rabbits who lose their sight. I'd be much more comfortable having an indoor blind bun than an outdoor one though, personally, as it's easier to keep a check on them.
