Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Pippin is poorly again. Vibes please...

Hey. Pip was pulling fur a bit last night but I wasn't overly worried because it's only been a few weeks and it's not grown back under her chin yet, so there's nothing to pull as such.

Roll on to 3.30pm today and I checked on the buns. Pip was obviously in pain, belly pressing, grinding teeth and really cold.

I feel awful because I've just been cleaning all day and didn't realise. She was so lively at 10am.

She got up and starting straining and pushing her bum in the air. A bit of wee came out.

I rang the vets they can't see us till 7. I've just managed to get some meticam in her (was waiting for the vet to confirm dosage)

She's a bit warmer after me chasing her to get the medicam in. But she's flopped on the floor teeth grinding and looking very sorry for herself.

I feel so helpless...

So sorry to hear this :(

If you feel it's an emergency, can you call your vet and explain? A cold bunny isn't good.

Has she warmed up at all since you last posted?

Hi sorry for the delay. Just got back home.

Pip was her normal self by the time we got there. Vet said the metacam had kicked in.

Ears are perfect
Teeth still perfect
Her bald patch is starting to re grow.
He said her straining and the little bit of wee that came out, was due to her trying to expell the gas!

He's still not sure why she is pulling her fur. He said to do last treatment of ivermectin tomorrow.

He said next step would be a general blood test to see if threw up any abnormalities. It's a bit expensive though :-(

I'm at a bit of a loss what to do. Feeling tearful and confused.

Ps thanks for your vibes... she's eaten a few bits of hay

I am so sorry. I do understand what this is like for you. On top of the constant fur pulling it gets you down.

I am glad she is OK. I also realise that blood tests are Bl@@day expensive! We can't all do them when and if we want to.

Sending more vibes xxx

Thanks Mighty Max. We just feel very helpless, it's not nice watching her pulling her fur and knowing she's going to make herself unwell.

Yeah, we're not sure what to do about blood test, concerned we could pay for it and show nothing. But also think it might show up something we've missed!

We've decided to wait till the nice vet is back next week and ask him what he thinks....

It will give her time to recoup from this as well.

Good plan!

Personally I would ask the vet exactly what he thinks it would show up, and the info it would provide towards further treatment. If he really doesn't know what he's looking for, I would question it's validity. Just my opinion, and I am in the same position as you with paying for vet treatment.

Yes that's what I wanted to ask. Was a bit frazzled earlier and forgot everything I wanted to say.

I don't want to just do it for the sake of it.
But don't know what else we could do.

I have lost track of what diagnostics have been done thus far to try to work out what is causing the fur pulling ?

I am not sure if you have seen these links

Morning.

Pip seems ok now. She ate her pellets this morning and I've just got home and she's sleepy but just ate a nice pile of plantain.

I'm OK just exhausted and a little frustrated. X

Hi Jack's Jane.

They haven't done loads of diagnostics because I think they were convinced it was behavioural at first. But they aren't sure now and think it's more likely a pain response.

Her ears are clean
Teeth are perfect
We are treating her for fur mites currently
Shes been treated for pin worms and EC.

We tried changing their pellets last year and reducing the amount. This has encouraged them to eat more hay but hasn't helped the issue.

We stopped giving them Vegetables
We starting giving them dried forage instead
We switched to timothy hay
They now have more exercise time and certainly don't seem bored.

We tried pet remedy plugin. Didn't help.

Her poops are large round and golden
They do get full of fur when she rips it out though

She doesn't get stasis, it's just bad gas which stops her eating. Once she's had pain relief she starts eating as soon as it kicks in.

Thanks for the links I have read them. I think I've overloaded my brain with trawling the Web.

I'm pretty sure it's not self harm because she doesn't actually damage the skin at all. She literally just pulls the fur out! The rabbits I've read about just keep chewing at themselves and create wounds.

I think that's everything.

I'm wondering if I can phone a rabbit specialist and see if they have any other ideas? Has anyone done this?

You would either need to make an appointment to see a Specialist Vet, out of courtesy I would let your current Vet know if you do this. Especially if you intend to continue to use your current Vet in the future. The Specialist would then request your Rabbit's clinical records from your current Vet. Or you could ask your Vet to either Refer you to a Specialist or maybe seek telephone advice from a Specialist. The Specialist would speak with a fellow Vet over the phone to offer advice/suggestions re a particular case, but they would be unlikely to speak directly with the Rabbit's owner without actually seeing the Rabbit for themselves first.

Has your Rabbit ever shown any symptoms of urinary tract problems ?

Thanks that's useful. Vet did mention they could refer us to a specialist but it's a really long way away so I wasn't keen on stressing them in the car so much. But I could ask if they will phone them and ask for advice. That's a better idea.

I'm not sure about urinary problems. She does wee near but outside the litter tray sometimes. Especially when she's poorly. But if I had gas I wouldn't want to hop into a tray for a wee.
There's no spotting and I've never seen blood.

Pretty sure she's not got sludge.
I'll pop a picture of her wee on here for you [emoji6]

What else might I look for. She's does drink more water than Archie but she eats more too.
