Rabbit going round in circles

ANNASBUNNIES

Hi,

my rabbit Gizmo has cataracts and blocked tear ducts.
I clean his eyes everyday bring him into the house in a small cage the last two days when I put him back in his rabbit kennel he seems really disoriented and goes round in circles. Could this be because his eyes are getting worst so he doesn't know where he is? His eyes also seem to move from side to side. Any help?

The symptoms you are describing suggest that Gizmo may now have a neurological problem, especially the nystagmus (flicking eyes)

I would take him to be examined by your Vet today. Good luck.

I would strongly suggest you take Gizmo to see the vet. This sounds like middle ear infection or possibly e. cunniculi to me. It could be the beginnings of head tilt and the sooner your bunny sees a vet, the better the chance for recovery.
The eyes moving side to side is called nystagmus and is often a sign of the spatial disorientation caused by either of these two conditions.
I hope Gizmo will be okay. Good luck to you. xxxxx

He only does it when I put him back, after about 5 minutes he is fine and goes out to his litter tray in the run. Could it be so intermittent?

Hi Anna

Lovely t hear from you again, but I am so sorry to hear about Gizmo.

The flickering of his eyes, nystagmus, indicates it could be a neurological issue.

There's some info here:

Your vet should also rule out inner ear issues and also EC:

There is also a group called: the Head Tilt Hoppers Facebook Group - they offer loads of support.

I hope the vet can help you with Gizmo. Let me know how you get on xx

Hi, we have seen the vet and he feels its an ear infection so I have drops to put in twice a day and put him on Panacur just in case it's EC. To bring him back next week to check his ears but if any other problems or he seems worst bring him straight back

Has he had a course of Panacur recently? (sorry I can't remember) xx

Anna, how is Gizmo doing?

Hi MightyMax,

Thanks for asking

He is doing ok, he has stopped going round in circles and his eyes are flickering a little bit, not as bad as before. The vet thinks maybe he had a stroke now but still treating him for ear infection and EC just to be on the safe side.

Lovely to hear back from you :)

I agree with your vet's diagnosis.

What antibiotics are being used for the ear infection?
