Does my English Spot have megacolon.

Hi Guys,

After cleaning out Benji's litter, over the past few months I've noticed a few larger big oval poops amongst his regular poops. They have always been nice and round and large/dry etc but recently I've noticed the big oval ones which are the same colour and dry like the others but someone pointed out that my breed of rabbit is prone to Megacolon. Now after reading up on it I'm convinced he has it.
Many other people say that their bunnies have egg shapes poops and are totally fine with it, Is it possible mine is the same and I'm getting it confused with something else.

He has a very healthy appetite, never any wet poos or mucus etc, just dry ones and they're all very smooth and lightish coloured, never bobbly/oddly shaped. He loves his hay and vegetables and drinks well.

Any advice would be so much appreciated as I'm drowning in all the different opinions, some saying egg shaped is normal and others saying its mega colon.

My bunny (english Lop cross) has megacolon. The first symptoms were the egg shaped poos but other than that she was fine. Last year she was constantly getting constipated and not eating. She was in and out the vets all the time until we finally found a vet that diagnosed it. We cut out pellets and veg from her diet now as she couldn't cope well on them, her diet now consists of hay, fresh herbs and critical care to try and keep her weight steady but she is underweight and won't put weight on. She is also on permanent medication daily - matacam, cisapride/emperid and zantac to keep her guts moving and ease the pain that stops her wanting to eat

Hi DebbieC thanks for your post. It sounds like your wee bun has an eventful time having to have her meds each day and specialised diet.
I guess all I can do is note all the symptoms your bun has and how you’ve had to adjust her food and keep a look out on Benji as the time goes on. Maybe he will eventually have the same things in the future.
We’ve also had to change his diet this last year as he was getting bladder sludge so the vet changed his pellets to the urinay tracked sticks and no more cabbage, kale etc so he gets constant hay, then romaine and lots of herbs in the evening before his sticks. This appears to have cleared the sludge and he’s peeing and pooping freely.
I’ll keep an eye on his poos over the months he hasn’t lost his appetite and tries to steel Mia’s food too
