  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit with runny nose

ANNASBUNNIES

I have noticed whilst cleaning my rabbit Gizmo eyes (he has blocked tears ducts) that the left hand side of his nose has been running it's a clear liquid. Anybody know what it could be? He is eating, drinking and pooping as normal.

Anna, lovely to hear from you again :)

Sorry to hear about Gizmo. The nose is connected closely with the eyes ...

Normally, protective tears continuously bathe the eye, and are drained away via the nasolacrimal canal (“tear duct”), a tiny, mucous-membrane-lined tube. The opening of the canal, the punctum, is located in the corner of the eye closest to the nose (medial canthus). The duct goes through the skull and empties tears into the nasal cavity.

I think you should ask your vet, but if the discharge is clear and running, then I would just keep an eye on it. If it turns white then of course talk with your vet again.

How long has it been going on?

Hi Mightymax, I will have a look at the links. It's only been a few days but not running a lot more his fur is a bit damp and when I put a tissue on it it's wet.
