Fur mites

Zigzag

Alpha Buck
Hello

I'm new here and live in the U.K. One of my rabbits has dry skin, dandruff with a patch of hair loss. I'm sure this is fur mites. I've made a vet appointment with a rabbit specialist, because my other rabbits having problems too, which is in a week (I'm unable to go before)

Does anyone know of a safe over the counter treatments that I can use before going to the vets? I've looked online but am just confused about what to use, and I don't want it to get a lot worse in the next week

I'd be really grateful for any help :)

Thanks so much

Guy

Hi Guy and welcome to the Forum

If you're going to the vet anyway, there's no need to pre-treat your rabbit with anything.

Vets use Ivermectin as a spot on dose and it's dependant on the rabbit's weight - roughly.

You then have to repeat the dose (at home) two weeks later, and some vets advocate another treatment two weeks after that to be on the safe side. All rabbits who live together have to be treated at the same time, as mites can be passed on to them too.

Hi Mightymax

Thanks for your reply! As a new rabbit owner I'm worried that things will get worse in the next week- that he might lose more fur (yes, I am a worrier !)

However if you think it's ok, that really helps

If you cannot get to the Vet for a week and you are certain that the Rabbits have mites you can buy a Spot On treatment called Xeno450

http://www.vetuk.co.uk/rabbit-suppl...xeno-450-6-pipettes-ivermectin-spot-on-p-1500

I believe that Pets at Home also sell it which would mean you could obtain it from a PAH store today/tomorrow, but I think it's a lot more expensive from there.

You can actually buy an over the counter product called Xeno 450

http://www.vetuk.co.uk/rabbit-suppl...xeno-450-6-pipettes-ivermectin-spot-on-p-1500

However, a vet will confirm to be sure that it's fur mites, and as you say you are a new rabbit owner, I think this is a good thing to do. I always believe it's better to have confirmation from the professionals before trying 'home remedies' :)

When you take him to the vet, you can talk about vaccinations and neutering as well, if you haven't already considered those :thumb:

The other important thing to remember is that rabbits don't get fur mites for no reason. It's always a sign of a depleted immune system, or a signal that they are fighting off an infection or dealing with something underlying. For that reason alone, even with 25+ years of bunny experience, I have always seen a vet when I suspect fur mites and *never* used OTC meds :)

Hi both

Thank you for your replies. Our rabbits are 6 years old and neutered. We got them from a rescue rabbit and, we liked them because they had fun personalities, and also because no one else wanted them!

We've decided not to give them any otc stuff. As long as they don't die of mites in the next week- yes, told you I worry!

Thanks again for your advice

I love to hear about rescue rabbits. It warms me through and through to know they have a second chance of a wonderful home.

Please don't worry, they won't die of mites :)
